Crescent City

Quiet day today. My back was still bothering me and Kelly wasn't feeling her best. Kelly worked with the boys and I made calls most of the day. It was a good day to stay in because it was overcast all day. Fortunately, it didn't rain so the boys had a chance to play some tether ball. This afternoon, we took a walk down to the Klamath River which runs behind our RV park. We were hoping to see a bear or an elk, but to no avail. Afterwards, we drove to Crescent City. We are staying the Redwood N...

... lanes on 101. Oregon isn't too fond of them in the mid part of the coastal route. But, oh, the sparkling vistas. Very magical.
The staties were out and reeling in speeders, but the Vision stayed in cruise control mode or was busy navigating tight curves on cliffs so no worries here.
I am now very aware of tsunami evacuation routes from all the signage. That will be the first thing I look for now when I enter the small seaside towns.

California, here we are!

To get back to the Pacific, we must drive back north into Oregon and we choose a narrow, less-traveled road near Yreka, through beautiful forests and along the ugly and murky Klamath River. Once we enter California again we start to see the huge trees of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, but it is dark and we get a motel room in Crescent City and hope to see some more redwoods tomorrow.

... minutes later at a rest stop. As we were getting ready to leave, a lady pulled up and told us she had been following us and noticed one of our tires looked like it was slanted out. Wendell checked and found the steel treads exposed, so we slowly drove the very twisty roads to Crescent City. We found a major tire chain and had the bad one replaced within an hour. While they worked under us, I prepared lunch inside and we thanked the Lord, again, for His protection ...

... of year. Think they open Memorial Day weekend, just three weeks away. Probably have not missed much. Also tried to stop at Grandfather tree (closed) and One Tree Cabin (closed). The Legend of Bigfoot was opened, but probably should have been closed. Brunch ended up being at our favourit local place, Garberville. Surely there were redeeming qualities. We found them in a small diner on the main street. The kind of old fashioned service, food you would ...

... on fairly even ground, past the odd garter or grass snake to the Ranger Pantoll Station for a rest in the shade. We took the Deep Ravine Trail back down the mountain side which gave us our first real look of the Giant Coastal Redwood, they were enormous!! Really tall, really wide, and a world away from the surrounding area. The mountainsides are generally reasonably barren and dry comprising woodland and shrubs , but in the ravines which run down from the mountain its ...

... posted for a picnic area so cut off to have morning tea, Rick was a little hesitant to drive straight in because he spotted a sign suggesting a 12ft height, (He has the measurements of the Castle firmly imbedded in his brain, IE: 12'5''ht, 6'9'' wide, 30' long) We noticed a bus park a little further in the grove and Rick went and asked the driver if there was a turnaround for RV/Buses Because he had figured the bus was higher than us so it must be ok, further in? The archetecture in that part of Eureka is Victorian and very eclecticly cool. We three Bubbas ride down to Oakland.
