Had a close call with an American tourist in the old district of Kyoto, he was more like a cliche really, but I gave him the slip and walked out amongst the other tourists in a quaint maze of lanes, crowded with geisha-for-a-day girls in rented costumes and rickshaws, with shiny chrome cartwheels drawn by perspiring, lean young Japanese guys. The only surly responses I have had from Japanese ( twice in ...

Breakfast was provided, I just stuck to the food that looked familiar so I had toast, hash browns and some buns. We went to Yamaha in the morning, the motorcycles were sick and the piano that was playing by itself was cool. I at beef curry for lunch it was really good. I can't last on just noodles. After Yamaha we went to Honda, where they make only the transmissions. Both places had Canadian flags up when we went, it's such a simple gesture ...

... yoghurt. Not so good with muesli. The first port of calf or the day was Kinkaku-ji - the Golden Pavilion and perhaps the best known site in Kyoto. Once again we missed the bus we needed by a second. When we finally caught the right bus 30 mins later - it was a Sunday after all - it was quite a long trip. It's a five minute walk from the bus stop to the temple and once you enter the grounds you are in a lovely garden. It was really quite busy today so they ...

... temple. Not a particularly well known temple, but on the 21st of each month it holds a flea market so when we read about this we had to go! The bus trip was long and the bus was very crowded. The quiet-seeming Kyoto that we had experienced so far had changed completely now that it was the weekend. The Toji market was also crowded and so very hot. The relentless sun was beating down upon us as we made our way through the 1300 stalls. It wasn't really ...

Tuesday, August 13th: Today I met up with Ida, a girl from Sweden who I got in touch with through Misako-san, my Japanese teacher. We met up outside Kyoto tower and thenwe took the bus to Kinkaku-ji, or "The golden pavillion". I think you all recognize it in my photos. I believe Windows 98 had a wallpaper picturing it if I am not mistaken. It was quite a long busride, but the bus here in Kyoto is so cheap. Only 220 yen no matter how far you ride the bus. That is about 14 ...
