What a glorious day it was! This morning Stephen and I woke up at 0730hrs to try and get some hot showers. Lukewarm was the best we could achieve but nevertheless we blinged ourselves in a dashing suit and tie and pretty dress. Breakfast was had at the hostel then we did a very quick trip of tea pot lane, most shops were shut because it was to early : ( We walked to the train station and met up with the wedding gang. Hours later everything started to seem ...

... sticks were pointing up, and if you picked a long cucumber then apparently it was clap-worthy! No wonder they're so thin - cucumbers on sticks are an after school treat! We also visited the Handicraft Center which was full of Japanese crafts and souvenirs. Friday, Jona and I spent the day wandering through downtown. We went to some shops and Jona played pachinko. The four of us had dinner on a lovely riverside ...

The gold and the red - our last day in Kyoto

There are so many sites to see in Kyoto. It's not possible to see them all and you always wonder what you missed out on. I know there are a couple of sites that I regret not seeing but I am very glad we saw the two sites we spent time at today. The girls have been very good running back and forward to the supermarket for us to pick up supplies. Today they brought us a real treat to have with our cereal. It looked like milk, came in a blue carton, but was in ...

We managed a fairly early start this morning and were out of the door before nine. Unfortunately we should have been out a couple of minutes earlier because we missed the bus we were after by about a minute. This was to set the scene for the day. We went to the local convenience store and bought four of the $5 all day bus passes - these are excellent value and allow you to travel throughout most of Kyoto for this single cost. Out first destination ...

      Day trip to Nara

We got an early start today because we wanted to visit the historical town of Nara, about an hour away by train from Kyoto. After a trip on the very luxurious Kintetsu Limited Express we arrived in Nara about 10am. The main sites can be reached in a walking loop of about 5 km. Probably doesn't sound much but it involves a decent climb and today was 30 degrees, so we felt every step! About 5 minutes into the walk we encountered some deer. There are about 1200 deer in the park ...
