... and cheap. The tour itself was relatively interesting but we were happy being let in to the 'tour only' section and wandering about on our own. The palace and the gardens are huge! The Japanese gardens were my favourite. Next we walked/ran between train stations to get to the next of the sites on my to do list. We managed a fairly early start this morning and were out of the door before nine. Unfortunately we should have been out a couple of minutes earlier because we missed the bus we were after by about a minute. This was to set the scene for the day. We went to the local convenience store and bought four of the $5 all day bus passes - these are excellent value and allow you to travel throughout most of Kyoto for this single cost. Out first destination ...

... cooking - soya sauce, mirin, miso, dashi stock - and goes into detail about umami flavour and western misconceptions. Then he talks about Kobe beef, what it entails, how it is bred, how it had not been exported anywhere in the world until about a year ago. So you know all those burger patty packages claiming they include Kobe beef? Well, they're wrong. Kobe beef has to come from a certain breed of cow, from a certain lineage, raised ...
