First holiday with Mausi

After some stressful weeks in Japan and China I met Mausi at Bangkok airport to spend three days of our X-mas holiday there.

Confined to quarters

(Jim) We arrived in Bangkok very late last night, after the whole comedy of errors with the delayed Jet Airways flight. Our plane arrived in Bangkok at 2 a.m. after a three-and-a-half hour flight. When we de-planed into Bangkok airport, we all exhaled. The airport was modern, spacious and above all clean. I think we did not realize how oppressed we were by the filth of India until we left. Thailand's GDP is $8,000 per capita, compared to $2,700 per capita in India -- a world of difference. Ad...

Day 1 - Friday 26th December 2008

Early start, up at 8.30 with so much to do. Can't believe we are going away for 5 weeks the day after Christmas Day! Didn't get home from Mum & Dad's until 1am after a great Xmas Day. Sarah's mum came around to help with the packing and so on! Somehow got ready to leave by 4pm after Mum & Dad arrived. Had a nice coffee with the parents at the airport before it was off on leg 1 of the journey down to Heathrow. No problems with the flight down, had a nice buttie on the plane, got to Hea...

Day 2 - Saturday 27th December 2008 - Bangkok

By the time we landed, it was around 4.30pm Bangkok time, and by the time we got through customs, got the bags, found the bus to the city and got to the hotel (the city seemed ages away), it was about 7.30. Hotel is smart, only about a year or so old, so thumbs up to the Marriott Courtyard Bangkok. Massive room with a King size bed. Modern deco with mirrors everywhere. Shower was fantastic after a long journey. It has an open-air pool and whirlpool, which may get a run out tomorrow. After a s...

Day 3 - Sunday 28th December 2008 - Bangkok

Had a good sleep and slept through the alarm! Rob made a coffee and we very leisurely got ready. Went to the Big M for breakfast, but steered clear of the muffins, had a nice caramel macchiato, and shared a banana cinnamon roll & a chocolate croissant! Explored the huge shopping centre by the Chang bar from last night, CentralWorld and had a good wander. Despite being in Bangkok, there were plenty of familiar shops, Dorothy Perkins, Next, Boots, Zara, TopShop! Lunch was a bizarre creation...

Day 4- Monday 29th December 2008 - Bangkok

Only kind of heard the alarm again so got up at 10.30. Packed up and had our usual late check-out by about 12.30. Were given a welcome voucher worth 500 Bart which bought us some lunch, had a nice steak sandwich while Sarah had a chicken and avocado wrap. Were planning on heading to the airport around 4.30 so didn't want to stray too far, as it took us about an hour to get from the airport last time. Took the Sky Train to Victory Monument and wandered around the street market there. Felt a lo...

Bangkok 'Wot, again?'

... of gold bling below, above and all around it.

What cannot be doubted is the real sincerity of the wide range of Thai people coming before it and the sense of reverence was palpable even to an ardent sceptic such as myself. This does not, however, indicate that I am beginning to feel any blissed out Buddhist vibes, it could be argued that the whole lot could usefully be melted down and the proceeds used to set up more robust health and education systems for the rural ...

... here may be too much for
me. In addition to this, my laptop is basically one of the most key
aspects of my life as if it dies or has problems I really have no means
of communication with the rest of the world. This combined with the
heat here makes me worry about how well my laptop will stand up to this
and I'm already starting to see a difference in it, it doesn't perform
as well, a couple times now it wouldn't power back up out of hibernate,
et cetera.

Day 2 in Thailand

... go back to Khaosan road for some evening festivities and more memories to come. Overall the experience has been eye-opening. I can't describe the streets and sights of Thailand without missing so much detail. It's incredible but I love it. I love immersing myself in the culture and seeing the different people on the streets. I highly encourage anyone to travel to Thailand just for the experience because it is a whole different atmosphere!
