Route 66.. Our first day

... huge conservation project of the Midewin Tallgrass Prairie), In Wilmington we saw the Gemini Giant, at the now closed Launchpad Inn.; From there we travelled through to Braidwood, home of the Polkadot Drive In, which had a number of statues, including Elvis welcoming everyone in, Blues Brothers for the order takers, and more on the other side of the building, which I forgot to photograph... Along the way we saw restored ...

So much to see, but is there transport?

We then realised this would be the last glimpse of the Missip that we'd been following for over a week. Now it's onto huge lakes as we go towards Chicago .

Today we caught up with an old friend I'd volunteered with in Melbourne 4 years ago. Gee it was neat to see her again.
We chatted a couple of hrs or so, then off towards the Windy City ...

... his married daughter lives in. He explained that he used to have a dairy farm with about 50 cows (that took his wife and daughters approx. 45mins to hand-milk) while he tended to daily farm work. After the cows they changed to corn and alfalfa farming. The farm now lays dormant as his son-in-law works at the furniture factory, with a small portion used for the horses that are bred. When we entered the barn all the stalls were filled with Shetland ...

Weathers improving ....slightly...stopped raining but still cold. Forecast for tomorrow into high seventies so that is a definite improvement. Progress is slow at the moment because every time we ask an American a question they just want to talk, and how they can talk!!! Nice though . Visited the war museum and the Route 66 museum at Pontiac, really interesting. The bike really uses lots of fuel, only did 100 miles and needed to refill it, it cost an outstanding $7 ...

Happy birthday to my love and my favorite clown, John! We celebrated after the show with wine, junk food, and four episodes of "Girls". A very lovely day which would have only been lovelier if we could have spent it with friends and family back home. But everyone sent John wonderful birthday greetings throughout the entire day, so I know we weren't far from people's thoughts. :)
