Fort Larned
At the suggestion on a blog that I read of another RVer we decided to drive through Kansas, which we hadn't been through before, and stop at Fort Larned. It is a well-preserved fort that was occupied during the Civil War but the troops sent there were never engaged in the war because they were too far west.

Day 1
... Also I think every bug, fly and any other airborne insect along the 508 miles we travelled are now stuck to my visor! After a long day its time for some kip on a Picnic table...... I hope none of the truck drives that are also here gets lonely! :-o ........ Onward to Colorado Springs tomorrow to ride Pikes Peak and hopefully make it to Denver tomorrow ...

... mile markers zip by almost as if you're driving in a car. In Kansas, an 80 mile ride consists of eight sets of spotting a grain elevator 10 miles down the road and watching it get bigger and bigger until you're past it and looking at the next one.
We left our dear friend Highway 50 today. She politely chauffeured us through mile after mile of gorgeous Colorado, helping us to cross the entire state. She is a respectable chauffeur so she wasn't willing ...
Another day of pushing the limits!
We woke up feeling tired but not broken, so we all decided to push it hard another day. We rode 96 miles from Dighton to Great Bend. Luckily the local gym allowed us to take a shower and a dip in the pool. A pool is a great luxury after a long day of riding. On our way out we met Deena who was gracious enough to allow us to camp in her yard. After a big meal we crashed out early. Thanks ...

... we rode through, the rail crossing arms dropped with the usual clanging of a bell and a freight train with four locomotives, hooting loudly, rumbled through at twice the normal speed; I would guess about 30mph. Even if only half a mile long at that speed an emergency stop is going to be a lengthy affair!
Mentioning small towns, we passed through Pawnee Rock and visited the Rock even though this meant a detour from our direct route - a bold move since ...
