... met more Californians and we exchanged war stories. At Kawaguchiko Station, I was about to call K's Mount Fuji Hostel when a girl asked me if by any chance if I was going to a hostel and if it was K's. We both needed to be picked up by their shuttle. Storm as her friends call her is a Torontonian. Once we checked in, we grabbed dinner at a restaurant recommend by the hostel. It was recommended because they serve "chewy noodles" as a local specialty. ...

... and period that we have seen. Most impressive were 2 large works of gem glass. Thousands of pieces of glass were laid and fixed on top of a translucent painting which is shown transilluminated. We have never seen anything like that by Picasso.
We charged up the hill planning to see the pottery museum. Unfortunately, they were already closed by the time we got there.
More hot spring and traditional Japanese dinner. Long travel day tomorrow.

... br> We then drive to Hakone-Yumoto for lunch and some shopping. The road takes us through very lush vegetation with steep descents. We even see signs saying "beware of monkeys crossing the road", but we don't get to see a live monkey. Also a sign (we've seen several of these) reminding drivers that the road they are driving on is an official Emergency Road. In the event of a major earthquake this road will be closed ...

... the resident hotel dog Haru, a black lab who is also a therapy dog. Sweet dog, feeling absolutely at home in the hotel lobby. This evening we have dinner in the Japanese restaurant, they reserved a nice table in a tatami room for us. Excellent food and service. The waitress has to take off her shoes every time she brings us something, then kneels down next to the person she is serving. I feel my poor knees and hip every time I see her kneel down ...

... then head out to discover the area.  Our first stop is the Hakone Ropeway Station near the hotel. Due to increased seismic activity the area around Owakudani is closed and the Ropeway is closed as well. The views from the Sounzan station is quite nice, however, Fujisan remains covered in clouds. We then drive down to Lake Ashi and stop at Hakone Shrine, a Shinto Shrine built on the shores of Lake Ashi. You can go down the stairs to the Torii which ...
