The Skellig Islands - An extraordinary experience.

... of gannets. That in itself is a memorable sight but consider the fact that the wingspan of a gannet is 6 feet across.

Next it is a quick jaunt over to a small landing dock on Great Skellig Island. You are allowed about 2 hours to visit the site. It is a steep and unprotected hike up to the beehive huts near the top. Many people have a difficult time navigating the steep steps. There are no ...

The last supper

... the touristy thing to do in Killarney don't you know! We trotted past the race track, which was built on landfill and has a 9 hole golf course in the middle!. We stopped at Ross castle, the scene of many a wedding photo as we found - at least 4 weddings stopped by while we were there!

So tonight is the last supper with the tour group. Dinner with everyone then out for drinks - just for something out of the ordinary!

XO

Fairies and Leprechauns!

... tourguide told us stories of the fairies, leprechauns and banshees, those spirits, who if crossed can make your life a living hell, literally. There are many fairy circles around the place, which are not supposed to be stepped into. Apparently one farmer decided to do this one day and ended up taking his life - he had gone mad due to every night going to bed, hearing music outside his house, getting up to investigate, hearing nothing ...

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Way Up High...

We spent the day driving from Dublin to Blarney and Killarny. All we wanted to do in Ireland was kiss the Blarney Stone in Blarney, but unfortunately we are not wired to take long walks in the pouring rain so the most we could do was pull upto the gates and creep. We continued on to Killarney which is the cutest little city ever...cobblestone streets, super nice people, beautiful little restaurants and bistros, cars parked on sidewalks. We ...

Killarney and Scary Farm

... and remain there until very late so we wouldn't have to spend any waking hours in the room, and we had a great time. The kids got to eat at BK, and there were plenty of shops to keep us busy. I went to an internet cafe to check email, and while I was there I checked out a few Killarney-area accommodations on Trip Advisor "just in case". I hoped to stay for our two boked nights just for simplicity's sake, but I wanted to at least have some options.<br ...

Killarney is Ireland's Banff

... he said I had strong boots and legs!! He also told me I would meet the nice Irish people here. Boy was he right!!! My hostel is amazing. The dorm room is cramped but I met 2 nice travellers. The receptionist even did my laundry (for a small fee but still half the price of laundry in Dublin). When I was walking to the tourist office, I looked at a map and a local approached me to ask me where ...

Doolin-Killarney-Dingle

The Dingle Peninsula and more

I don't remember ever being so grumpy and sleep-deprived in my entire life. We found out that other people who hadn't booked private rooms had been offered them, so we were starting to get very frustrated with the whole Shamrocker thing. The second day of the Shamrocker tour took us on a ferry across the Shannon to Dingle, a cute fishing village where we ducked into the supermarket and had a picnic on the quay. I fed the over-sized ...

... her twelve year old son to practice his Irish dancing for us. He was extremely good, but I’m sure the poor kid felt a little embarrassed at having to put on a circus act of sorts for his mum’s paying guests. And so on later reflection it turned out that this was to be our bronze medal winning accommodation, and for better or worse had just enjoyed our top three favourite Irish B&Bs in three successive nights.
The Ring of Kerry

For my only full day in Killarney, I chose to spend my time out of town, having seen enough of it the previous afternoon. I headed out on a bus tour--the canned way to see Ireland (or any other country), but one that's essential at times for travellers without their own transportation. Killarney is the equivalent of Banff because it lies amid mountain scenery. Not in-your-face stunning the way the Canadian Rockies are, but quietly beautiful. The Ring of Kerry is a road in ...
