First Stop - Munich

My European adventure will begin in Munich, Germany. Though it is not my main destination, I thought it would be a good start since it was very close to Austria and the Bavarian Alps. I'll be spending two nights in Munich, so I'll want to pick my sights carefully. More than likely I'll just want a good overview of the city and take some nice walks through the city. I'll be staying at the Hotel Cortiina, which is very close to the Marienplatz.

Oktoberfest fun

... taking part. All the ****** idiots are confined to the tents, but everyone is well behaved. The Germany police...never seen anything like it - very strict and tons of them! We stopped and watched them managing the crowd and taking a few young guys away. They weren't impressed with a guy wearing a " All cops are Basgtards" T-shirt. Actually we had our own German police experience...we got pulled over and searched and had a report ...

... Even thought we understood ‘schnitzel’, what type of schnitzel it might be was anyone’s guess!

The waitress knew a little bit of English so we managed to order some things that sounded relatively safe, but we weren’t too impressed. The food was like what you might get at a cheap counter meal at a pub, but this wasn’t cheap!

When we got back to our accommodation Jan and Fatima offered us another beer each, which we found difficult to say no ...

Travel Disaster

... train information and gives us more bad news. The train is coming in at 5:23, not three minutes later as we had expected. Every minute counts at this point, and this is nearly devastating to our calculations. The clock above us reads 5:16. We still have two more stops!

We jump on the train as soon as it arrives and count the seconds as they drag by while more people board. The subway gets off to a slow start ...

... br>We were back to Munich around 1835, and despite Charles' plea for tips, I didn't feel obligated to leave one. I felt we'd been taken for more than one ride.

We went to the tourist information office and asked where to buy the Raisch chocolate for Mary. We went to the basement of Karstadts and found the chocolate. They also had a grocery and a food-service area, and we tried to eat there, but service had stopped at 1900, and it was now 1902. RC wanted ...

Tales from Heidelberg and Munich

... up in the prison were the ones who frequented here; again, every conceivable place was covered in graffiti, this time carvings all over the wooden walls and tables, and chalk on the ceiling. The atmosphere was incredible. There was someone playing piano in the corner, candlelight, and there were really old pictures of all the fraternities up on the wall, along with old tankards. This was a place where sampling the local beers was probably almost compulsory, but I ...

OKTOBERFEST!!

It's Oktoberfest time again!! From Lisa: Here in Munich it started on the 23rd of September and goes on for a wild two weeks. During those two weeks over 6 MILLION liters of beer will be consumed along with 500,000 roast chickens, 50,000 pork knuckles (didn't try any of those!) and 100 whole oxen! It's like a huge state fair with carnival rides, candy apples(!), gingerbread hearts, and Ferris Wheels alongside the places they call "beer tents", but are actually ...

Oktoberfest!!!!!!!!!

... up and were clinking glasses with us. They were telling jokes and taking pictures with us, and when we got up to leave, I think they were a little disappointed! We ended up in the Paulaner tent, taking outside seats where we could still hear the band playing inside. We met a new group of people, some from Rome, and some from Germany. We danced on the tables and enjoyed our first round of Weiss-beer. We met a young musician who was playing songs with some rolled up paper and a mouth ...

World Cup Madness and other intense moments

... insane party of my life possibly... there were what felt like millions but were probably only tens of thousands of people all chilling and wearing their countries' flags and cheering sporadically. There were live performances from a Brazilian group, House Party from the Netherlands, and Stamping Feet, which was a German techno group of sorts. More importantly, I was about 10m away from Right Said Fred performing "I'm too sexy". If only David Hasselhof had ...

A Beer in Bovaria

... The only bus tour that was offered left at 8:30am and seeing as it was already 10:00am it looked like I was out of luck. Then I started thinking; one the most efficient roads ever built in the history of all civilization was at my finger tips. Excited and awaiting the ultimate driving experience I went to Europcar and rented a Mercedes Benz A ...
