Went to the Piazza Maggiore after breakfast. It is the historic centre of town with the obligatory church/cathedral (Basilica del Santo Petronio). We visited the City library first. It is a very cool library, very modern but with a beautiful old ceiling. Couldn't do much reading as it is all in Italian.

It was the Church after that. The most interesting thing in the church other than the ...

... is that the figures were sculpted in the early 15th century. They are six hundred years old!! As if this was not enough, the church also has an upstairs gallery, with a fantastic painted ceiling, and yet another amazing sculpture set. How come they could do such wonderful work five and six hundred years ago, and now Saatchi pays millions for a crazy woman's dirty knickers and a stuffed shark? It makes no sense.

After all of this, Michael went in search of ...

The reason for this strange title, is that we have decided to send home our laundry - the cases and now stuffed with books and in danger of collapse, and so are we from humping them on and off trains! So this morning Michael made two big parcels and set off to find a post office. He found one but was told the parcels had to be in a box. Where the ###### do we find a box in Bologna??? Well, the answer turned out to be round ...

... disappointing to be honest. Still we set off to find the National Gallery, which turned out to be about ten minute walk, and then went to lunch in a nearby cafe/bar as the gallery didn't open till two. Lunch was good and simple, but a bit pricey. We were tomdiscover though that this price is typical of Bologna. Ah well, can't have it all cheap you know! Then the gallery... Joy still hasn't come down to earth. She ...

... one that told us about the buffets that many restaurants have. For the price of one drink, you can eat all you want between about 5 -7 pm. We did that one night at his recommended place and the food was great.

Bologna is not on the big tourist map, but that's part of the charm. If you're a foodie at all, then you have to give this place a visit. You won't lose any weight here, but you'll be damn happy you came.
