... up some more information about the trail, I noticed that other articles suggested walking halfway to Hatajuku and reporting the same km distance that I’d read to the train station. A quick search on google maps confirmed that the first article greatly underestimated the distance back to the station. I also learned that the trail joined the regular highway in Hatajuku so effectively ended hiking and turned it into potential dangerous highway walking. I amended our ...

This morning we head off to Hakone, about 80 min train ride away from Tokyo, to stay in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan). Hakone is located in Japan's Fuji National Park known for hot spring resorts and Mt Fuji views. At least we are told there are good views of Mt Fuji, not that it ever made an appearance for us. ... guests seem to be here to enjoy the onsen facilities, you only have to site in the foyer - 90% are roaming around in yukatas (cottons dressing gown). The surrounding gardens are beautiful with 2 waterfalls and a small shrine. Cam and Omi had a soak in the hot tub and Celie is amused because when you open the toilet door the toilet lid automatically puts itself up and makes a sound like 'hi'. We area about to go to dinner, not sure what to expect but we're very excited. Until ...

... and even wifi and a post office at the top! The huts are pretty basic and organised to fit as many people in as possible. So the dormitory is essentially a room with people lying side-by-side (your "berth" is literally as wide as the sleeping bag) and about three quarters of the length of Rod, with two levels on each side! In our dormitory there must have been about eighty people. Needless to say, we didn't get any sleep and were quite relieved when we were "woken up" at ...
