Cruzando Belice

Two days in Belize

Going to Belize was a kind of adventure - already before crossing the border we had to go through talks with local Mexicans trying to squeeze money out of the passing tourists. As you could imagine this was not Tijuana and four Polish nationals driving in a rented Mexican car was probably the attraction of the day. For sure people on the border did not make an impression as if they were in a rush or something. Before the car was allowed to set a tyre on the Belizean soil, it had to be fumigat...

... through for us lending us the money we needed to pay the broker so Mom didn't need to drive all the way up from home to bring money. Finally at 1 pm everything was all arranged, and we managed to drive across the border with our very expensive pedimento just to cover 300 feet. Immediately we went back an hour to Belize time(No Daylight Savings Time) So we arrived at Belize customs at noon. Got a broker and the dance began all over ...

Cerros

We were very keen to leave Orange Walk after our experiences there; so we were up early on Friday to catch the bus to Corozal. We waited and waited at the bus station and watched bus after bus to Belize City, to Belmopan, to Placencia and to Punta Gorda go past. But none to Corozal. We'd heard that Corozal was quiet, but there was supposed to be a bus service there. After two hours of waiting, a friendly Belizean man approached us and asked us ...

Just like home!

Hello, Cross border trafic was easy even if the customs officer gave me the most thorough grilling I've had for a long time... This caribean country really is just like home: No matter how many car wrecks there are in each front yard - the lawn is meticulously kept! And most taxis are Mercedes! (About ~'85 models). But then again, no, people here walk much slower! b.

... to see the top of one of the pyramids showing above the tree canopy, as we found out later this pyramid is now about 11 stories high but the Spanish recorded it as being 25 stories high. On arrival we had a salad lunch which was very nice and then the guide talked about what we would be seeing. We started at the local museum which had a few items in it. We were told that their where actually a lot of nice items found at the site but the security of the ...

Border Cross on Bus to Orange Walk

... surrounded by others, i think it may double a s a brothel. The housing is similar to Mexico except maybe a little more stories on the houses and more twig and thatching rather than concrete and brick. We have booked a tour to Lamanai (Mayan for "submerged crocodile") with Jungle River Tours for tomorrow with some travellers we met in the hostel. This in an archaeological reserve on the New River Lagoon near the Settlement of Indian Church.

Pickpocketed in the hole that is Belize City

... new found respect for pick pockets. I didn't expect the little kids and I didn't feel a thing, I was super impressed with how well they did it. I wish I had a video of it so that I could see who it was and how it went down. So I was pretty bummed and definitely had the wind taken out of my sails. They got away with about 60 US bucks, my credit and ATM cards, my student IDs, and my drivers license. The worst thing they got away with was my actual wallet ...

... it - very effective security system I imagine. After a quick trip into town to find a bank and the Lamani Tour operator, I'm off to find out if I can get a quick tour of the rum factory - maybe not such a quick tour, maybe a long drawn out tour. Curt will be happy to know that they also make Scotch there but I think it's a blend, too bad.
