We thrns et off towards Genrio. We had no choice but to use the Interstate I-40 as the next few miles of the Route 66 is on Private Land, so we went off towards the New Mexico State line.

As we hit New Mexico, the clocks went back an hour.

New Mexico is mostly farm land and small towns a short drive away from eachother. As we entered the main Tucumcari strip, it was a shame to see lots of derelict ...

We beat most of the storeclerks to their jobs this morning. We thought Old Towne opened at 9:30 like the brochure said but most stores opened at 10 or whenever the heck they thought was a good time.... We meandered through the junk shops, indian jewelry stores, basket and blanket stores and a couple of art galleries....(Not my style) Bought enough to fill shopping bags once again and then took off for Amarillo TX.

The Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo had billboards about every 10 miles it seemed along the highway so we took the bait and stopped in to check out the place. This is the famous restaurant along the historic Route 66 and home of the "free" 72 oz steak, but the catch is you have to eat it within an hour or you pay full price. We got a closeup ...

Our waiter from earlier arrived and introduced us to his barely 18 year old fiancée (he's 26) and her twin who was now dating their lesbian friend who the fiancée had been previously engaged to. Real Texan relationship! We got a round of the worst shots we've ever had. Potently strong with 4 different spirits and about triple the normal shot size. ... because we plan to spend a couple of days here. Dolly noticed a big sign at the Welcome Center that warned of rattlesnakes and reminded us that this is their home - not ours and to be careful. Because the sustained winds were in the 40 mph range, we decided to get a motel (one motel a week is built into the budget) and selected a Days Inn on the eastern side of Amarillo.
