I'm in Russia!

I am in Russia! My flight was decent overall. On the long leg from Atlanta to Paris, I was lucky enough to be seated in an exit row by a door. This gave me ALOT of leg room. Unfortunately, the flight from Paris to St. Petersburg wasn't as good. The plane was smaller, so I had to check my carry-on bag at the gate, and as usual, my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me. Both legs of the flight were pretty close to on-time. Upon entering the Pulkovo 2 airport, I knew I wasn't in Kan...

Day 2 in Piter

First, I'll apologize for the less-frequent-than-I-had-planned updates to this blog. The hotel offers wireless Internet, but it's not free it costs 6euro/hour. Between that, and the fact that I've been pretty tired by the time I get in at the end of the day, I haven't touched my laptop much. I will not upload my photos to Flickr until I get home. When will I learn? I thought I had worn a very comfortable pair of shoes yesterday, but when I woke up today, I found that I had some big blisters o...

Day 3 in Piter

I forgot to bring my GPS today, so I don't know how much walking I did. I feel pretty safe saying simply "alot". :-) Today's big event was touring the Hermitage museum. It is one of the largest and best museums in the world (or the best, depending on who you ask). The museum is very impressive -- they have a huge and varied collection of art, sculpture, and artifcats on display. In addition, the museum is housed in Catherine's Winter Palace, which is a very impressive sight on its own. After ...

Day 4 in Piter

Today was a beautiful day! The weather was sunny and clear, and very comfortable for walking around without a jacket. I ended up walking nearly 21km today! St. Isaac's Cathedral was fantastic! The place is HUGE. It's not used for church services any more, but it can hold about 10,000 people when it was! The tour of the collonade was awesome, as well. With the beautiful weather, I had a great view of the downtown St. Petersburg area. After leaving St. Isaac's, I cut through the park across the...

Day 5 in Piter

Today was yet another beautiful day. Warm, sunny, and a comfortable breeze. We only ended up doing 1 of the 3 things that we had planned today, although that didn't cut down on the walking! We did about 20km today, with almost 10km in Peterhof. We first made our way to the boat launch on the river behind the Hermitage. We were able to purchase tickets to ride a hydrofoil to Peterhof (30 minutes, as opposed to 1+ hours by bus). Since we had a couple hours to spare, we stopped in at the Hermita...

Day 6 in Piter

Today was my last day in Piter, and I had the whole "Russian" experience today! Sveta & I started out by going to the St. Petersburg Metro. It's one of the largest & deepest in the world. I was very surprised to learn that there was a Metro station just around the corner from my apartment. I had walked past the entrance several times, and thought it was just another store! We rode the Metro to Moskovskaya station and then went above ground to catch a Marshrutka to Pushkin. The Marshrutka are ...

Zufriedenstellend

from Kentish

Great Hotel!

from dessertqueen
Just returned home from our Russia river cruise. My husband and I spent one night at the Corinthia Nevskij hotel before boarding our river boat. We asked the hotel to send a car to the airport to pick us up, I highly recommend it, it was great seeing our name on a sign with the driver waiting for us. When we reached the hotel we were informed that we were upgraded to a suite, with no extra cost. That was a treat, the room was spacious, beautiful, clean, and very comfortable!! The staff at the reception desk were extremely helpful and friendly. We chose not to have breakfast at the hotel, it was very expensive, we ate at a local restaurant nearby. We felt very safe taking a walk the evening we arrived in the neighborhood of the hotel. Lots of shops and restaurants, etc. I highly recommend this hotel. It was well worth the money!!!

Fine

from Kentish
Clean, modern, somewhat bland but well used by Western guests. Choice of restaurants and bierstube in arcade good. Good location and feels safe inside complex. Warned about muggings when we checked in and security very visible.

You will notice a very small card on the desk alerting you to mosquitoes - this should be more prominent and please do use the repellant in the room...it is only after the first night and being feasted on that I found this. Judging by the number killed on walls/ceiling by previous guests I was not alone and this is a problem at this time of year.

Glorified 4 Star Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed in Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel in St. Petersburg during March 2006.

I wasnt overly impressed with the hotel itself as I believe the overall standard is of a glorified 4 star hotel. The location was really good but the hotel itself felt a bit "dated" with its decor.

However, the service was quite good and worth mentioning. We arrived very early in the morning and the manager was very accommodating. Not only did they give us a room, they gave us an upgrade into a junior suite. The only problem was that the decor of the room wasnt so great ... it was in need of refurbishment.

The bathroom was that of a typical 4 star hotel, complete with plastic bin. This I did find a bit disappointing as it was a junior suite.

Also, the hotel has a few restuarants, most of which seemed to be closed during peak dining times in the evenings (and also were closed during the day for lunch). They only left you with one option for dining in the hotel while we were there ... the most expensive option. In addition, this restaurant had a "Spanish" theme week going on and one was limited to this restaurant and one type of cuisine ... Spanish! On more than one occasion, we had to resort to room service.

They do have a wonderful breakfast buffet but they dont tell you that there are two prices .. one for continental buffet and one for hot buffet. We had to ask about 5 people before we got a straight answer about this as they automatically charge you the full buffet price even though you may have only had a bowl of cereal! And even then the pricing is ridiculous. If you want a continental breakfast, this only includes breads and jams. If you want a piece of cheese of a piece of meat, you are charged the full amount (which is quite expensive)! They dont advertise any of this and it is up to you to figure it out. Even when we asked staff, most didnt speak any English and you couldnt get a straight answer out of them!

If this hotel had advertised itself as a 4 star hotel, I would be writing a different review. I would have probably quite liked it because I would then know what to expect. It certainly isnt the 5 star hotel I thought it was.

So good we came back

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was our second visit to St Petersburg and this hotel. We arrived on my wife's birthday and waiting in our delux room was a beautifully decorated plate with chocolate and chocolates wishing her a happy birthday. Which I thought was a wonderfull touch. The staff are attentive but not intrusive. As said by others it is in the center of the city so most sights are in walking distance. The food in the hotel is of a high standard and we enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar and cafe.

There is a lot of talk about crime in this city but we found that we felt safer here than a lot of European cities infact we felt safer here than our home city of Coventry

Located at the Center, Good Food

We stayed at the Corinthia Nevskij Palace for a week

while visiting St. Petersburg on a business trip. The

location is excellent - very close to many of the great sights

including the Anichkov Bridge, with its four sculptures of men

taming wild horses, and the bronze monument to Catherine the

Great. Normally, the hotel is also within easy walking

distance of the Hermitage museum but temperatures were 20

Celsius degrees below freezing last week so it was too cold

to walk very far. An excellent and extensive breakfast buffet

came with the room. Internet access has to be purchased either

one hour or one day at a time from the front desk. The hotel

style is low key modern Art Deco - not very interesting.

The rooms are medium sized but comfortable, quiet, and warm.

The service in general was good and the staff spoke good

English. It was expensive.

Familyof Four Great Hotel

from josephtravel
The staff was excellent and there were more staff in all areas of the hotel than in most others hotels. The hotel and our rooms were very clean and always being cleaned. The beds were comfy. The bathroom a nice size with great pressure. The workout/spa was clean and machines all worked. The only negative was a charge $12/day or $6/hour for wireless internet. The food was excellent. We felt safe. The location was great... We will stay in Feb2006. We visited the Radisson for comparision. This hotel felt less stuffy.

First Class Hotel,Centrally Located

from alfredman63
We stayed for 3 days at the end of October. Having read the other reviews we were expecting a first class hotel and were not disappointed. The hotel was clean well run with competant staff and fluent english at the reception (very helpful). The food was superb with a fantastic selection for breakfast. The Main restaurant was good but a little expensive. we found better value at the spanish restaurant nearby. The hotel is well situated for easy walking to the Hermitage (20 mins) & other attractions. The bedroom was spacious with queen size bed Bathroom & Shower were clean & Modern. i would have no hesitation in returning to Corinthia Palace again

Comfortable in St Pete

from A TripAdvisor Member
Clean, good service, fluent English. Rooms were to the standard of a very good quality US hotel. Not extremely luxurious but very comfortable. I spent little time in the room. Nice bar to have an iced vodka in the late evening. Restaurant was good but nothing to rave about. St Pete is a wonderful city but beware of pickpockets. Located in the heart of the city.

Fantastic Hotel

from seagull69
What can one add to the other reviews. This Hotel is Excellent it made for a very enjoyable stay in St Petersburg. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was of a high standard. We asked for a chauffer driven car to take us to the Peter Hof and they arrange one for us there and then. One of the Best Hotels we have stayed in. It may be pricey but worth every penny.
