    Andersonville excursion

A travel blog entry by sethfield on May 02, 2015

As my time in Columbus came to an end, I made a daylong excursion to the Civil War prison site at Andersonville, an hour to the east of Fort Benning. The prison site itself consisted of little more than an open field with scattered memorials and other prison key points such as Wirz's Headquarters and the famous Providence Spring, but the guided tour of the site was very informative ...

    March 24, 2015 – Andersonville, Georgia

Gray skies at the beginning of the day. We have some sun in the afternoon, but now it's cloudy again. Sun soon we hope.

Spring continues to pop out in Georgia. As we drive along we see redbuds and dogwoods blooming. We even see a yellow bell today. But the azaleas are not out yet. But we see the "real" harbinger of spring—pine pollen. We stop for a picnic ...

It's another gray drizzly day is South Georgia. Maybe we’ll get sun tomorrow.

Today we drove about 80 miles to Warm Springs. It’s another small southern town. This one that has really revitalized its downtown core. There are lots of little funky shops (mostly closed on Monday) and several restaurants all to cater to the tourists. We ate lunch at a little BBQ joint. It has about 15 seats ...

... street lined with early 20th century 2- and 3-story buildings most of which are still in use by local merchants. There is a huge peanut collection facility on the edge of town and a sign directing passersby to the deer processing plant. Outside of town is a large produce facility which we suppose is for collecting and shipping produce. Streets are quiet without much traffic on a Sunday ...

... We see one motor home towing a truck with a golf cart in the truck bed. Do what you have to do to get your stuff where you want to go! It’s the snowbirds going back home. They’ll get there in time to do their taxes. Spring has come and Florida is getting warm. Time to go north for the summer!

We arrive after a 7 hour trip ready to get out of the truck. Getting set up is a learning process—relearning/remembering ...
