Anyway, in the 18th century the sanctuary established by Sid Bou Said was surrounded by residences that were built by wealthy Turkish governors to take advantage of the spectacular scenery from the sanctuary's cliff top location. In the 1920, the French gave the area protected status applying a pretty blue and white colour scheme to the buildings that is now seen all over the tiny village.

This morning we visited the island of Djerba linked to the mainland by a 7k causeway across a shallow stretch of sea. The island is very low (15m max) & has many scattered houses between what were the oldest olive trees we have ever seen as with most Tunisian dwellings most under construction or semi derelict. Day 9 & 10

The following morning we headed towards Djerba, a tourist island near the Libyan border. The roads were good, and after a short ferry trip costing only 0.800 TD (Less than R5) for all of us plus Corrie, we arrive on the island around midday. We found a little place on the beach were a room for 4 was only 4TD more than camping, so we stayed there for two days, within 20m of the sea. ...
