... interested in Japanese garden landscape, thou the highlights of visiting the residence/garden was sampling all the treats. Pastry stuffed with yellow yam, purple yam, pig themed pastry, all the yum yum treats. Alex and I had our share of sampling before taking a peek of the residence.

Lunch is another highlight, the good thing with group tour is one gets fed quite well. With the rainy day like today, my hope of jumping in the salt water pool ...

... as it joined up to the mainland in the 1914 eruption ( on the east side so it still looks like an island and you need to get a ferry to go to it from Kagoshima). It has 3 main peaks, the main one being Naka-dake at 1060 meters but only the south one (1040 meters) is active. Luckily for me climbing is prohibited!!!!! I was able to take it easy - do a leisurely bus ride to the lookout points and then a bike ride around part of the island. A nice afternoon.

... at the volcano in the bay. The evening was nice. I tried out a Sushi restaurant and spent the meal talking to a friendly old Japanese gentleman in his broken English - far better than my non existent Japanese - while his wife looked on as we drank more beer than was probably good for him. And now I'm back at the hostel about to call it a night but first trying Mitake, which is a brand of Sweet Potato ...
