    After visiting Erika's relatives we crossed Kinko Bay by ferry and stayed in a traditional Ryokan in Ibusuki. For the uninitiated what this entails is sleeping on the floor and taking off your shoes before you enter the room. In this particular establishment there were only 2 showers down in the Onsen (Japanese baths). Each room had a toilet (I think) but none of the rooms had their own tub or shower.     ... ready pretty quickly to check things out. After about a 5 minute train ride and a 40 minute hike we arrived at Iso Swim Beach. There was almost no wind on the beach but a wind line was approaching and it looked like it might be possible in a few minutes to kiteboard. The sea here is impressive and in the middle of Kagoshima bay is a giant smoking active volcano! Yeah, no kidding, this thing is discharging ash probably as I type!
