Historical Traveler Reviews of Copthorne Hotel Birmingham

Doesn't justify its 4 stars

from MalcolmSu
I had two nights in here on business when my usual Birmingham city centre hotel was full and I needed an alternative near New Street station. The hotel is in the middle of a very large roundabout and I found it difficult to get in and out of it by foot (it suits arrivals by car or taxi better). Walking in and out of the hotel in the evening when it was dark I didn't feel particularly safe walking past the down and outs and beggars.

The room was okay if a little dated and the bathroom was very poorly lit. I prefer a cool room but I couldn't find out how to raise the temperature in the room even if I wanted to. I didn't sleep well with traffic noise all night and the usual city centre revellers noises through the night (and this was mid-week).

Breakfast was quite good if a little overpriced. I only found out on checkout that I should have been given a voucher to cover breakfast as I was staying more than one night...

Staff on reception were very helpful and attentive.

Overall I wouldn't class this as a 4 star hotel - it's in need of a refurbishment - but wouldn't object to staying there again if I had to.

Good value hotel

This hotel is very central - easy to get there from the train station, close to shopping and the canelside areas of Birmingham. Paid £50 for a double room as an internet rate - this place is definately a real step above what you usually get for this price in England. Nice rooms, swimming pool etc.

Depends on the price!

I had to book last minute and there were other events on in the city so I paid top price of £155.

The hotel was impersonal and about as standard as it is possible to acheive. So absolutely nothing wrong but just not special.

They did try to charge me for breakfast (which was excellent) in the morning but relented without too much pressure

No heating and a mouse!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Late October and my room had no heating at all. At 12.30 am a sweet young man from reception set to work with a monkey wrench (really!) and by 1 he had admitted defeat and brought a heater...this didn't prevent the pipes of the redundant radiator from rattling and clanking in the early hours... what could be more refreshing than a trip to the sauna to drip one's way through a gym of people exercising, having sweated it out in an airing cupboard...bring on the mouse in the bar...not as upmarket as I'd expected.

Pool and gym..

I stayed here at the beginning of September 2004.

The room and bathroom were spacious with a great big window. Oddly, the bed was one that pulled out of the wall (it was all set up, etc. when we arrived, though) and it seems the room must sometimes be used for meetings. I don't know if that is the reason that the bed clothes were not big enough - perhaps there was a rush on the night we stayed (the breakfast room was certainly busy) so that my room was just an emergency room with emergency too small bed clothes...

I was a little disappointed with the changing facilities for the gym and the fact that you have to bring your towel from your room there. Also, if you are going for a swim or to use the spa pool, you have to traipse downstairs in your swimming stuff to get to the pool. The spa pool was quite small - fine for two people, a bit too close for comfort with four! However, the pool area was nice.

Overall, I would say the hotel was average and not quite up to the standard I expected. The large room and bathroom was really nice and breakfast was good. The location is good too. I would stay there again as I got a reasonable good deal.

Extremely Smoky

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed there and had an upgraded "non" smoking room but it reeked of cigarettes as did the whole hotel from lobby onwards.

Not one for kids as the whole hotel felt smoky. Really got into the throat and clothes etc. For adults or smokers very centrally located and fab breakfast.

Fab getaway

Stayed here for a girlie pampering weekend and shopping extravaganza and was not disappointed. Rooms were light airy and spacious overlooking the canal....... great shops in the merryhill shopping centre and great bars across from the hotel all within staggering distance..... Hotel staff were friendly and hotel provided excellent pampering facilities with gym, sauna, treatments etc Had a great time!!!!

Copthorne - excellent value!

from Urlauberin3
We stayed in the Copthorne Birmingham in July 2003 and liked it very much. Over the internet we'd booked accommodation with a three-course-dinner, which was absolutely fabulous! The waiter pampered us with three courses and additional little delicacies in between - dining in true style! A slight drawback was the fact that the room didn't have air conditioning and that it was a hot night. A fan (if not air conditioning) would have been helpful. The leisure facilities were great - very well-maintained and a pleasure to use. The hotel bar is stylish and open until 1.00. Pint of lager/bitter about 2.75 - not too much for such I nice place, I believe.

Absolutely fabuloshious!!!

Spent my wedding anniversary here and it's now ear-marked for an annual tradition. Excellent service and GREAT for exploring the city.

Copthorne - ideal hotel for short break

from A TripAdvisor Member
Couldn't fault the Copthorne - stayed for a long weekend, excellent, attentive and friendly service, good 'roomy' rooms, thoughtfully adapted room for wheelchair users, huge breakfasts, less than 5 minutes from the the shoppping district of New Street to the east and the bars / restaurants of Brindleyplace to ther west.
