After 6 long, hard, stressful weeks(!) on Haad Yuan, we embarked on our PADI Open Water dive certificates on another part of the island. This meant 5 dives each to a depth of 18m (60ft) and, to be honest, we were hooked after 1! The waters were incredibly clear, warm and bountiful: we saw fish, stingrays, eels and corals beyond anything we thought we'd see and so decided at the end of the course that we would take the Advanced certificate as well. This allowed us to dive to 30m (100ft) deep a...
Koh Phangan, Thailand johnandlouise... there I took the Sleeper Train from Bangkok to Suri Thani, and then a ferry to the island. On arrival I headed straight to Mai Pan Rai to spend 4 days chillaxing in my beach bungalow. And it was a chillaxing 4 days, where I was at had no phone signal and no internet. So I was well away from the world and it was ace!

After that me and a couple of lads I'd met up there (Ian and Willem) headed for Ban Pan Puri on Thong Noi Pan beach. This was a bit more social than before ...
Ko Pha Ngan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand bazzrosetravels... would eat lunch off the side of the pool so that he didn't have to get out). As usual, we met at the dive shop at 7 a.m. and packed our bags and boarded the Simple Life boat. Our first dive would be a deep dive (30 meters or 93 feet) which is a requirement of the certification. Thirty meters is the point at which some people are affected by "Nitrogen Narcosis" in which they feel a bit slow and a bit loopy, as the nitrogen from their tank affects their brain. It is also ...
Koh Tao, Thailand seasiabound... did when we got off the boat was rent motorbikes. The best and worst decision we made the whole weekend. There was a group of five of us who broke off from the main group because we wanted to be on the main beach so we wouldn’t have to spend money on taxis to and from the beach. Unfortunately for us the most popular part of the island was also the most difficult to get to. You had to drive over a series of huge hills and me having never ridden a motorbike before for that long ...
Ko Pha Ngan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand laurahenne... work) and reached the viewing point. It was nice as hopefully you can tell by the camera phone pics, dooh haha. After a quick breather we headed back down this time looking at the wildlife more and saw some half black half grey squirrels, a kestrel looking bird and about a billion ants. Every metre of hill there was a motorway of ants running across, so inevitably we got eatten a few times.
We made it back to our town in time for dinner and had some ...
Ko Tao, Thailand gaz-lj... We stopped before we got burnt. Tom saw a guy knock out a girl which annoyed me. I ended up talking to the guy who did it and turns out hes not a nice guy at all and he wanted to 'slit my throat'. Jackson came over and took me away, probably a good move. We all left after that and in the taxi i got started on by some Australians aswell! We had alot more people this time so when we started shouting at them they quitened down quite quickly. I enjoyed the night.
Ko Phangan, Surat Thani, Thailand kieran_stuart... and walk off.
This day became more and more special as the sun set and night time grew. Time for a bit of madness ;-) First, cocktails (I had a Fuzzy ****!) and a dish full of tiger prawns sat on the beach. Then a walk to the island Muay Thai Kickboxing ring to see some local fighters ply their trade, with locals placing bets, shouting wildly and baying for blood, all against the traditional Thai / Indian soundtrack screaming out ...
Ko Tao, Thailand garyjheath... around. Back on the boat 2 of our friends said that they saw sharks, so three of us went back in the water armed only with snorkels and found them. As the visibility was bad it was quite a crazy moment as you could not tell how many there were (we think 3 though) and you would see one appear in front/behind/to the side of you and then quickly vanish!! Needless to say Nia stayed in the boat. Sadly our underwater camera broke - maybe it was not very waterproof after all so we ...
Ko Phangan, Thailand niaandandrew... sharks!! But no, plenty of other fish but not a scary shark fin in sight. After half an hour a french guy came to my rescue showing me where to see a trigger fish, and then a black tipped shark. Wow, a lot bigger than I expected, maybe 5 or 6 feet long, its mouth at least a foot across, it could have taken my armif at wanted, but it just seemed to ignore us and swim away.

Maybe not such a short description, sorry.
Ko Tao, Thailand ianvictoria... up on ko tao. in retrospect, great decision considering bangkok went up in flames and the protestors nearly tore pattaya apart but of course it was all put under control and pattaya is now enjoying their 14 days of water fights amongst half naked thai girls but I try not to think about that too much. so my back has been quite the issue as of late. as i mentioned in passing earlier, i really torqued it when i was carrying my dive ...
