At Barra we had watched the Portuguese close down and move out for the winter, here we watched North Europeans arrive and get bedded down for the winter. This was just as complicated a task involving setting up kitchen tents, erecting wind shields, washing lines and ...
A silent drive to the train station. Frank drops me off, and I don't say a word as I grab my bag and close the car door. Now what? North or South? I could likely stay with Luis again in Lisbon, but I hate backtracking. Its 6:30 in the morning, and the first train arrives at 7:00, heading North. I ponder for the 30 minutes, then when the train does arrive, I let it pass. I'll head South, to Faro. I'm not sure when this ...
Faro, Faro, Portugal jmckerricher... about perfect and the most direct. QF9 Mel to Lon, then switching airports in London to catch BA2694 to Faro), and the timings meant we missed a lot of the crowds and traffic, particularly in London - so well done to Yvonne who pulled together our travel arrangements.
There were a few things we had to watch along the way - mainly in London, for instance, there is now a shuttle bus service that runs between London Heathrow and Gatwick airports (so no longer a ...
... from staying here, was lovely and quiet in the day time and very busy in the evenings, when lobster-red foreigners wandered the streets looking for dinner in one of the many characterful restaurants. Being careful not to judge the entire Algarve without having visited it, we did notice a standoffishness and a reluctance to communicate using Portanol. Too many Spanish tourists perhaps? In almost every bar, shop and restaurant, people were more keen ...

The next day to fill in time before departing we looked at the Chapel of Bones, which was built from the bones of the monks from the local cemetary. Over 1200 skulls. Definite goosebumps eh!

Algarve piirkonna pealinnas käisime vaid korraks õhtul. Mulle jättis see nn piirkonna suurima linna kohta ikka väga väikse linna mulje.

Väidetavalt toimus 1444.a just Lagoses esimene orjakaubanduslik tehing, kus müüdi Aafrika inimesi orjadeks eurooplastele. Peale seda kujunes Lagos orjavahetuse keskuseks.

... with this trip. The other day her arm got stuck in the door of the bus. Not a big bruise, but we laughed pretty hard (as did others on the bus). Yesterday, her backpack fell on that same arm. Now she does have a big bruise and we have been laughing about that all day. Hopefully, no more bruises for Melanie. I will update with a photo of the bruise as soon as we return to the US. My time is running out--will update again later.
