Aloha Hawaii

Aloha Waikiki on balmy Oahu - what a place to "hand loose" as they say in Hawaai.  After a couple of  hectic last few weeks in Auckland preparing for this trip, we absolutely enjoyed being wrapped in the warmth of sunrays as we explored this beautiful island.   US$2 would buy a bus ride on "The Bus" from one side of the island to the other.  So what if the trip took a good couple of hours, destination was well worth it.   Arriving way up north at Sunset Beach in time to catch a surfing compet...

Aloha

Note to self: when travelling anywhere, print EVERY little bit of information regarding the trip so that you have a hard copy in case somebody needs proof. Even if it's not a complete informational package, any little bit of info helps. A couple of international phone calls and several attempts at faxing the QANTAS terminal later, our flight informationg departing Honolulu was on paper, and we were allowed to check in, with no time to spare. That is, the check-in closing time was pushed back ...

The Wasted Day

We caught a shuttle bus to our breakfast orientation meeting at the Hard Rock Cafe at 7.30am on Wednesday. Welcomed with a lei and a photo, we picked up some complimentary cakes, drinks and fruit and sat down. There our host gave us a brief look at some of the tour packages they had on offer. We'd already discussed what we wanted to do, so it was just a matter of organising ourselves and fitting what we could into our 5 days on the island. We settled on a circle tour of Oahu, a kayaking and s...

Oahu Circle Island Tour

Our bus was late, it seems the norm here to be running on "Hawaii time" so it wasn't too big a deal. Unfortunately for us, we were one of the last groups to be picked up, so we weren't able to sit together on the bus: Kelly and Carlo sat at the back, and Miguel and I in the front. We passed the Aloha Stadium, which was our original destination on Wednesday and we realised just how far away it really was from the Waikiki area. Our first stop was the Dole Pineapple Plantation, which was next to...

Kailua

There was a printing error on our ticket and so we were forced to rush to the Hyatt Regency as the bus was there 20 minutes earlier than we had anticipated. We were travelling to Kailua, on a tour that would introduce myself to snorkelling whilst re-introducing myself to kayaking, something I hadn't done since year 7 camp (on a lake where the water was barely waist high). Kelly bought an underwater camera for the group for $17US, which we later found out was not only more expensive than in Ho...

Mahalo, Come Again

The alarm went off at 6.30am; it was time to get ready for our Hanauma Bay snorkelling adventure. So I pressed the snooze button a couple of times. At around 7.30am we received a phone call -- the snorkelling adventure had been cancelled, and Hanauma Bay was also most likely to be closed all day due to the rain, and jellyfish. What a bummer! Miguel and I wanted to make the most of it and so caught the bus to Ala Moana shopping centre. Miguel was in search for a very specific calendar that my ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Continental Surf Hotel Honolulu

Save on your room, spend more on activities.

Don't let the reviews fool you. We found it to be a nice hotel. It is a budget hotel but not dirty at all. The rooms are clean and very functional. They have a sink, microwave oven and refrig. The staff was friendly and informative. Yes, it's an economy hotel, but hey, save your money on your room and spend more on activities and shopping. It is in a great location, all of the rooms have views of either the ocean, Diamond Head or the golf course. We found it very pleasant and will stay again. We recommend it!

" Not my Favorite "

Im a 65 years old and have traveled to Waikiki probably 30 times. This was by far the worst Hotel I have ever stayed in. My Friend and I decided to give it a try. The rooms were tiny and filthy. There was not ever a manager around. It was as if they all leave at 3:00Pm then you are on your own after that. Then on the weekends the Management staff is gone until monday around 10:00. It was very difficult to get a response from anyone pertaining to our issues. They have a need for some improvement.

Make up your own mind!

I have recently returned from a wonderful two weeks in the Hawaiian Islands which began with a one night stay at the Continental Surf Hotel prior to going on a seven night cruise through the islands. I had read the reviews posted on this site prior to going and was somewhat guarded. What I found was a very clean, comfortable and well-located hotel at an excellent rate. I had booked the hotel for $44/night (and also paid a small service fee and tax). My room was on the 12th floor and had a view of the mountains and a side view of Diamond Head. The staff was pleasant and professional. The room was adequate for the two of us: twin bedded with a color TV with remote, a nightstand with lamp and clock radio, a desk and chair and a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a sink. Cups and saucers were provided (so bring your own spoons, etc.). We bought a few provisions for breakfast at a nearby grocery store and found everything in excellent working order to prepare a simple breakfast prior to departing on our cruise. I would encourage the reader to do their research and to not discount this hotel. It was one of the great values we encountered in Honolulu.

The best "value" was the people with their wonderful spirit of Aloha.

They were welcoming, gracious and kind. You are in for the treat of your life. Remember "Aloha" is "Hello" and "Good-bye" and "Mahalo" is "Thank You". With these two words, you are "in". Have a great time in Paradise!

Great

This hotel was great! I read the reviews before I went, and was worried about what I would find. What a waste of worry time that was! It was clean, nice, comfortable, and cheap! The only thing that I really thought would be nice was a few more dishes - a bowl, and some cutlery would have been nice. As for the comment about bugs, and antsl, welcome to Hawaii. This was my nineth time over, and that is something you can not get away from unless you spray and use a lot of chemicals. The ants are everywhere. If you do not keep food out, and get rid of your garbage daily they are not a problem. As for this being a nasty area, not at all!! You can not get away from hookers, and drugs no matter where you go there. In fact the place I stayed for my second week (a reputable hotel) was noisier, with more "night life" around. It was also quite a bit more expensive, and no nicer! I think this hotel was wonderful, and would not hesitate to stay there for my entire trip from now on. I am glad I did not listen to the reviews!!!

Waikiki on a budget

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading some of the reviews, I was quite nervous about staying three weeks at the hotel. I was completely wrong about my prejudgement.

Yes it is a little smaller than a regular hotel room, but it had a refrig, micro and sink. The room was clean and we actually had a ocean view. I do recommend the room if you are: on a budget, don't really care about walking 1 1/2 blocks to the beach, or really know Honolulu and know what a deal it is. We actually were not on a budget and had visited Honolulu several times before and will definitely stay there again. The hotel across the street was over 200.00 per night. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Horrible staff

Horrible service, terribly dirty rooms. Not worth it. Management staff was rude and unhelpfull.

Value in Paradise

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent a glorious ten days in Paradise for a bargain! I stayed at the Continental Surf, an economy hotel ($60 per night) with an ocean view from my room and a view of Diamond Head as well. Definitely a low-budget hotel, but for my purposes it was fine. Watched the free Hula show on the beach three times, the free musical entertainment at International Marketplace, took the free Walking Tour of Waikiki with a very knowledgeable native Hawaiian lady. There are so many free/low cost thing to do there. Didn't need to rent a car! Surfed with a borrowed board from a nice person I met there, went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay(used my own equipment) and hiked to the peak of Diamond Head for a breathtaking panaramic view of Waikiki. Lived like a local, eating plate lunches and at various local restaurants. All totaled, I spent less than $50 a day, and had a great time. Evenings were spent with some locals I met, drinking beer, learning to play the ukulele and what ALOHA means, thanks to the kind family I was adopted into there. I went there for a vacation, but what I got was a total cultural experience. All on a shoestring.

Do not stay here!!

Who ever is in charge of marketing/advertising this hotel is pretty good!...it fooled me!! first of all, the parking garage was VERY VERY VERY tight to drive in and i don't mean cool! .. if u r lucky, u can get a parking space,... that barely fits any car!...paying a daily fee to park your car here is a MAJOR RIP OFF!! The rooms were very small, it smelled very VERY musty, saw baby roaches crawling on the kitchenette counter and bathroom counter. Anyways, the only positive things i have to say is that it was a block away from waikiki and the employees were polite!...it cost me about 280 dollars for 4 days plus parking fee. that saying about u get what payed for don't even pertain to this hotel!!

Unsuitable, smelly, bug infested room

from A TripAdvisor Member
I booked a reservation through an on-line reservation company for my daughter and her fiance. They found the room to have a terrible smell and ants crawling on the bed.

Not for your honeymoon- very small, but nice staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
My Husband and were booked to stay at the Continetal Surf Hotel based on the information found on Expedia. The hotel is in a semi-run down part of Honolulu, (house on the corner seriously looked like a crack house). The rooms were extremelly, extremelly tiny and had a double bed. (my husband is over 6 foot). People were living in the hotel and cooking, the smells of frying foods was nauseating. Website is totally misleading. We did have an ocean view, but the peach wall paint was peeling, the bathroom was so small, you had to squeeze by the toilet to get to the shower nozel. The staff was very nice though, they gave us our money back and we were able to upgrade to the Sheraton, Princess Kaiulaini (sp). So, word of advice..don't scrimp on your honeymoon!
