    ... courtyards with lush gardens and when I mentioned this to Betty she showed me a book she has that catalogues the 'hidden gardens of Piacenza'. They are incredible - lots of the blocks in the city centre are built around a garden courtyard so from the aerial photos you can see so many patches of green throughout the city. I just love the feeling of walking around and getting little glimpses of hidden treats - even if I don't get to experience them firsthand!

    ... without dessert so Francesco and I shared some pannacotta with fragola. The pannacotta was so white, I'm sure the milk must be different here and tasted beautiful. The coulis was made from fresh strawberries and put the sticky stuff I've had in Australia to shame. This was not syrupy or sticky, just thick and slightly sharp.

    After that we had to hurry as by this stage we were running almost 2 hours late for visits that had been lined up with friends in town, so we ...
