Neptune Day, Cape Town

... see too much the first day, we saw some giraffes and buffalo but nothing too exciting. The next morning we got up at 4:30 AM to head out, and we were able to see the big 5 (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo) plus giraffes, zebras, hippos, and other stuff all before our breakfast stop at 9. Some of them got really close, and we saw giraffes, elephant packs, zebras, and buffalos all cross the street right in front of us. There were about 9 or 10 people in ...

Dune 45 to Cape Town

... we would at least have been given snorkels or something. I'm glad that I did it but I did feel it was a little over-rated, although the sharks were within touching distance, none bashed into the cage & the water was so cold! I was in the cage shivering & "brrrrrring" when the tour guide called down to me "Are you shaking cuz your scared?!" I was like "NO! I'm flippin freezing!!!!" I was more concerned with the coldness that the sharks I think! I'm glad I can tick it ...

Out of Namibia to South Africa (in one piece!)

... 3pm we were up Table Mountain! The weather was glorious and as rain threatened (and sadly arrived) for the next few days we decided to grab the opportunity and stretch out our legs after the long bus ride! We are now ducking in and out of shops and bars to hide from the rain today and tomorrow we have a wine tour planned covering 7 wineries, a cheese tasting location and a chocolate factory - wine, cheese and chocolate - surely that consititutes heaven!?!?! I am, needless to say ...

The end of Cape Town

... be on this site. Next was a short 6km bike ride across some of the Cape Point National Park before finally getting to the point itself. We took a quick walk up to the first lighthouse that is no longer used because it is continually covered in mist, then across to the headland to see the new, lower lighthouse. The next part of this action packed day was to walk across to the most south-west point in Africa and then we went home. It was that evening that Chris first ...

Short but Sweet re-visit

... class view, the price was very reasonable (about $30A including a bottle of wine). We lingered until the last cable car down, feeling that this had been a very special Cape Town experience. A crazy taxi ride back to our backpackers, a stroll up and down Long Street, then we were ready for bed - our last night in Africa. Next morning we had a very civilized cooked breakfast in a street cafe and leisurely readied for our airport pickup, for the flight to Mauritius.

forgetting the obvious

... may be thinking, how on earth could they getaway with this! Where are the cops or people!? Well the cops are actually terrified of them and the general public will get angry but know better than to mess with them. There are full blown taxi wars and they are very territiorial about their routes (sometimes actually shooting and killing someone over it). But sadly there is no other way and many people are very dependent on these taxis. Without them the country would be in a ...

Cape Point

... turns because it wasn't very clearly marked. Signs pointed us every which way, and every time we asked someone we got a different answer. Soon enough, though, we made it into the South African version of Grand Central station. We had ten minutes before the next train left, so we ran to buy our tickets and get back to the train before it left. It had started pulling away just as we started running towards it, but we chased it down and it stopped ...

Moyo Craft experience

... Then you walk through some tall tent affairs and into a large craft market. Again I did not find my beaded cell phone bag but did see a whole lot of incredibly intricate crafts and fascinating people. Beyond the craft market is a restaurant and bar in the same tent like style with curtains separating the seating arrangements. Some of the seating in the restaurant is for lounging more than sitting and there is some seating up in ...
