Our hotel was pretty nice but the very small elevators were not fully functional and far from adequate for the large number of people who were staying in this hotel. It is close to the beach however and offers private access through the on premesis casino. I could see myself staying there again if they offered a discount rate.

Arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan was much more Americanized than I had imagined. While I was sure there would be all of the conforts of home if you looked hard enough, I didn't expect them to dominate the landscape as they did. We checked into the Condado Plaza Hotel and were pleased to find out we were upgraded to an ocean-front room. This hotel was a fine luxorious c...

Enjoyed by stay

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-01-22
Overall had a nice stay at the Condado. Hotel staff was very courteous and responsive. Room was very nice. Good restaurants...nice casino. Lobby can use some refurburshing. The negative of this hotel is that it does not have a nice beach...very small and crowded. Pool area nice. Good value for the money.

The Wyndham Condado Plaza Hotel

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-01-20
My wife and I just got back from a " long weekend" at The Condado Plaza, in San Juan (5 nights/4 days). We had a wonderful stay. Wyndham Hotels took the Condado over in Nov. of '02 and (I feel) have done a remarkable job, in a short period of time! The food, and our accomodations were great, and the staff was absolutely top-notch, showing a genuine concern for our well-being and enjoyment! We will definitely return...

Not bad

from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-12-30
Just got back on Christmas Eve and thought I would post something since I used this message board to help decide where to stay in San Juan. My wife and I (early 30's) enjoyed it a lot. Since I have fewer negatives than positives I will start with those. First off let me say that if you are looking for a Ritz Carlton experience this is not the place. As a lobbyist on Capitol Hill I have traveled extensively and think I have a pretty good idea of a good and bad hotel. This place needs a little help on the outside and inside. The paint is pealing on the outside of the building in certain places and there are scuff marks on the walls in the hallways and rooms. In essence, the hotel has a few years on it and it could use a little renovation. That is about it for negatives.

On the positive side, this is a great place if you want to get away for 4-5 days. San Juan has tons of flights from all over the world, so getting there is easy compared to St. Thomas or Aruba. The people at the resort were VERY nice. Checking in and out was easy as was getting a chair and towles at the pool and drinks at the swim up pool bar. We had a fantastic room overlooking the ocean from the 3rd floor for only $200 a night. Total mix of kids, younger adults and the older crowd, but the place is big enough that you really don't notice it. The casino is the best I have been to in the Caribbean and offers free drinks to those gambling, while some other San Juan casinos do not. Plenty of tables of everything you would want to play and a good crowd. In fact, I spent one night shooting craps with the basketball players from Auburn who were staying at the hotel, along with 4 other D-I teams, for the Puerto Rican Shootout. Food and drinks can get expensive at the hotel, but you can find drink specials if you look. Cobia's resturaunt does a nice happy hour from 5-7 with $2 Medalla Light (PR being a US territory means no monetary exchange which is nice). Also, if you want to venture down Ashford Ave. (looks like a mini Miami Beach with the condos and hotels) there are several good places with good food, cheaper drinks and a great view of the ocean. In fact, there is even a Subway, so if you want to get a cheap lunch followed by a nice dinner at the hotel you can do that too.

The wife and I are looking very forward to going back soon. It is an easy to get to place, that you know will always be warm, and not too expensive compared to other Caribbean islands. Hope this helps.

A good choice

from NewYorkBebe on 2002-11-28
My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights just before Thanksgiving. We had a great time! (and I am a picky person).

We had received this hotel on Priceline for $75 a night, which was obviously a great deal. Upon arrival, since the hotel was not crowded, they gave us an ocean front room.

The Pool Bar had delicious food and drinks.

Rooms are spacious and luxurious.

All the grounds are very pretty with tropical foliage. There are two great pools, one freshwater with a pool bar and slide, and one saltwater. there were also two hottubs. We had a great time relaxing by the pools.

A couple complaints include: pigeons at the pool area - when we were eating they would not stop bothering us and trying to get at our food.

Also, the beach is very tiny and unappealing - I would not sit on it. I don't really like beaches in urban areas.

At checkout, they tried to charge us for calls and taxes that they should not have - so all i can say is make sure to inspect your bill.

If you stay here join Wyndham by Request - then you get free calls, can request room type, and get a free welcome snack and beverage.

I have to say that the service in this hotel was exceptional.

I would recommend this hotel and would consider coming back. However, if you want to stay in Puerto Rico for more than 4 nights, you may want to stay in San Juan a couple nights and then at a place like the Hyatt Dorado or Wyndham El Conquistador so that you can also get a great beach and more secluded vacation.

Another fantastic hotel if you can afford it is the Wyndham El San Juan by the way. By far the best I saw in San Juan, but i did not see the Ritz. I personally liked the Condado Plaza pool areas more then the Marriott's.

The Condado Plaza is located in a good area and within walking distance to restaurants and shops.

Not all it's said to be

from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-11-11
The Condado - When we checked in, the reservation was not the same as what was confirmed over the phone. So be sure to ask questions at check in to verify that they have the reservation made correctly!

The rooms were clean, but not the finest and not ready upon arrival.

Everything that I had read on the Condado, said that it was on the beach, which it was, a very very small PUBLIC beach. Which on most days when walking through the sand, there was a strong smell of urine. Who knows what you were walking through.

The restaurants were really over priced for the food you were served at dinner. I found a much better place to each just a short walk down the street at Cafe del Angel, a small establishment, but worth the walk and you can't beat the prices. They have daily specials and the food was much better in flavor and quantity.

The grounds were nice and well maintained and the pool areas are open 24 hours. There are security guards present at night for your safety, probably due to the public beach. One pool with slide, volleyball net and swim up bar. The other is a salt water pool and two hot tubs, which need to be cleaned a little more.

The view out into the ocean and hearing the waves crash upon the rocks was the most memorable during out stay.

Wonderful Place, great little beach

from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-09-26
We stayed at the Condado Plaza from July 21-24th and it was a really lovely place. Great little beach right off pool area with hugh boulders breaking the surf offshore. Pool with swim up bar was nice, although drinks were expensive. Hotel was great, good service, Casino and live bands in the lobby area on the weekends. Good package deal included meals (all you can eat at the buffet). Really recommend this place! The room was fabulous with a balcony that overlooked the lagoon, at sunset it was gorgeous!

Can't wait to go back.

Noisy loud young people were more important than the guests

from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-06-12
Condado rooms were acceptable, but not the necessarily the finest.

There was some kind of activity which is COMMON at this hotel. Kids as young as 15 and 16 were walking up and down all over the hotel until 3 am in the morning. I literally went to the front desk and complained and by 3:30 am things quieted down. I spoke to the front desk the next morning and they apologized.

I was unimpressed. I lost a whole night's sleep before catching my plane the next morning. I suggested that they limit these big groups to one floor so the paying guests in the hotel could get some peace.

Be prepared to pay $10-15 for parking, and tip tip tip.

I have to say though, that when we called the concierge or the bell captain, the service was par excellence.

Ocean Front in San Juan

from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-05-15
We stayed at the Condado Plaza at the beginning of April 2002 and had a great time.

The hotel and resturants were fantastic and with the ocean on one side and bay on the other we were surrounded by water.

We recommend ***** the hotel and area for a getaway vacation.

Many shops and local cafes within walking distance (5-10 minutes).

A cab for under $5 will get you to Old San Juan and the tour of the rain forest is highly recommended.

Friendly people at the hotel capped the package and we are ready to go again.

Great location nice views, rooms are ok, I had to change rooms due to dry blood on my sheets. They gave me a suite for the rest of the stay. Try to avoid a room on the street side. I would give in a 6.5-7.0 on 10 point scale
