Puerto Varas

Puerto Varas is a small German settled town in the south of Chile and the next stop on our way to Puerto Montt and the Navimag. It rained constantly for the two days we were there. On the second morning we got about 3 hours without rained so we wandered around the town and took in some of the sights, including the view point from the top of Cerro …

We arrived into Puerto Montt about 9am, having had a decent bus journey south from Santiago. It didn't get light until 8am, and there was a cold breeze blowing off the sea - our first reminder that we were heading south to winter. We had a couple of hours to burn so grabbed some breakfast at a local cafe in the town centre. There were no tourists …

From Bariloche we had a few options… we could take a long and tedious bus ride down to El Calafate on a bus that is known to break-down regularly and often OR take a lovely boat/bus ride combination through the Andes into Puerto Varas, Chile. We settled on the boat/bus ride combination through a company called Turisur. The …

I woke up at crack of dawn to catch the bus to the bus terminal in time for my 8 AM bus from Bariloche to Pto Varas. I intended to leave hostel by 7 AM, but left more around 7:15 and started to worry at the bus stop when no buses are passing by and one doesn't arrive until about 7:35! I have no idea how long it takes to get to the bus terminal, and …

We wished we could have stayed longer in Ancud as it was such a sleepy little fishing town; but we had already booked our return bus tickets to take us onto Puerto Varas. This involved leaving the island and heading back north for two hours. We had passed through Puerto Varas on out trip to the hot pools in the mountains. This small town …

Maria was great, breakfast yummy, good bathrooms. Music from the house next door until late. Whenever the hot water was used there was a high pitched screech as the tanked filled up! There were only 4 or 6 of us staying there...when its full it must be going off every 5 minutes. Night staff were very noisy dumping baskets of logs onto the floor above us for the stove at midnight. Not the best 3 nights sleep we've had and we needed our sleep.
