    ... of Koh Samui. I'd been resident for four days. The Thai landlady didn't ask my name nor queried my passport. Our only conversation four days previous had been in fluent Thai negotiating rental terms. Like most conversations in Thai it ended with the exchange of hard currency. No further questions necessary.

    ... piles in front of them and they stood in huge piles of their own waste. Once closer, you could see marks from the mahout's hooks and some with fresh blood. Heartbreaking. One was on its own for tourists to look at. I bought a ridiculous amount of bananas and kept feeding it. I wonder how often they get fresh food, they all looked quite thin. It was all very sad.
