The hotel we are in is literally just a couple of hundred metres from the Graceland ticket centre (and shops, lots of them). You are then given a tour time and shuttled over the road to Graceland (a lot smaller than you imagine). We half expected the whole thing to be rather tacky but in fact, it is all rather tastefully done with the visitor rooms being maintained in their 70's state. ... white blues/soul guy I've never heard of who increased the awesome factor ten fold, with a divine voice and dogs bollox harp playing. I believe in an earlier blog I expressed II some disillusionment about the music of the south, well after Clarkesdale, Lafayette and Memphis I take all that back. The city itself if flat and ugly really, with old square, swat buildings all mean and impersonal. Its the people that make it. Most of them black, which is very noticeable now after time in Aus where you don't see so many. I love the sweet and sugar accents too, and the homely smiles you get on every corner. I'm feeling at home here already. ...

... We arrive in Memphis at the Holiday Inn to check in for our first night here. We park the car unload all the luggage and get the elevator down to the lobby only to be told we have the wrong Holiday Inn.... There are two Holiday Inns on the same Street, oh my goodness!! Back in the elevator reload the car and off we go to the right one this time. After a quick freshen up we get a taxi and head to the famous Beale Street. Its Friday night and Beale Street ...
