Historical Traveler Reviews Comfort Suites Lakeside Houghton Lake

    Fabulous Hotel

    from

From reading some of the earlier reviews, I was hesitant to stay here. However, I am so glad that I chose the Comfort Suites Lakeside. Some of the reviews that people wrote were absolutely absurd. All-Inclusive drinks?

This is Houghton Lake, Michigan, not the Bahamas. Whoever wrote that should be banned from ever staying in a hotel.

Everything, from start to finish, was absolutely amazing. The waterpark was fantastic, my kids absolutely loved it. The lazy river, the water slide, the hot tubs, kid's pool. The tiki bar in the waterpark was a delight I did not count on.

The FREE deluxe continental breakfast, with belgian waffles, muffins, cereal, juice coffee, milk, etc.. was better than I have had in a lot of restaurants, let alone hotels.

Speaking of restaurants, the restaurant in the hotel, was absolutely stunning. The menu was fantastic, and the chef certainly takes a lot of pride in his work. One of the best dining experiences I've ever had, from their signature drinks to their 2 lb. lobster tail and 3 lb. steak for dinner.

The rooms were absolutely beautiful, with private balconies over looking the lake.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and hope that you will try it.

Beware! No pay-per-view movies....but the t.v.'s all have A/V jacks so bring your own dvd player, playstation or xbox! Big fridges/freezers and microwaves in the suites! Everything was neat and clean....great service too! The lobby has a computer you can use to access the internet with, lotso f arcade games and exercise equipment. The water park is fantastic! The slide is great, the lazy river could be bigger but works great, and kids will love the shallow pool with sprinkler! There's an adult-only hottub as well which could easily seat 12+ people.

I've read the other reviews listed here and have to say...must have been awhile ago. I was leary staying here after reading the bad reviews but it seems a couple people were just angry at nothing (like all-inclusive drinks???). This hotel is still under construction...adding a bigger exercise room and more suites but the halls are quiet, there are lots of firedoors but they close slowly and quietly. And get your lazy butt out of bed before 9am to take advantage of the tons of food down in the lobby! if there's noone there at 9 they'll close it down, but my gf and I were there at 830 and stayed til almost 10 and the food was left out for us. You can make your own belgian waffles, they've got frozen waffles to toast, bagels, muffins, english muffins, cereal (capn crunch, raisin bran, cheerios, etc...) fruit, lots of juice and coffees, milk....LOTS OF FOOD. Did I mention the waterpark is fantastic?? The lifeguard/bartender (yes they have a bar in the waterpark but you have to drink at the bar) was really helpful and funny too.

BEST HOTEL STAY I'VE EVER HAD. The only way this place could get better would be a masseuse. Get a hottub room, they're awesome!

Great time for everyone staff was professional, clean neat great food!!!!!!!!

A new place to have FUN with your Family for the Weekend

    from

I happened to stumble onto this site looking for information for another vacation we are planning and figured I would check it out by looking at a review where we have recently stayed. I found that there were both pro and con comments on Comfort Suites in Houghton Lake and I was surprised as to a couple of the responses... I will have to stay that I have stayed there and even took my family there for a long weekend get away this summer and found it to be a great place about two hours from the Motor City on one Beautiful Lake...

This facility is a new location about a year old located directly on Houghton Lake with beautiful guest suites overlooking the lake... I noticed that others had complained about not being on the lake... Well as any good traveler would know if you want to stay on the lake you are going to pay more... If you want to overlook the lake your are going to have to pay more, and you also have to request to have a lake front room when booking... (that's why there are diffrent rates!)

I would have to say the room rates at this facility and the quality of the facility are par or better with where I have stayed around the country... Now if you want a $75 dollar room to sleep, there is a super 8 around the corner that I priced out. But to have the benifits of a New Facility - Suite Rooms - Indoor Pool with Waterslide, Lazy River hot tubs and a Tiki Bar (for the big kids) - Full Service Resturant and Bar - Work out Room - Game Room - and FREE Morning Breakfast - and a BEAUTIFUL LAKESIDE ROOM to sit on your Balcony and watch the sun come up then you want to be staying here...... Will I be back YOU BET Will I be telling others, DONE

Ohhh Yea, should you want to have a Beautiful Wedding Reception there was one going on when we stayed there.. (there was a band and there were kids opening and closing hallway doors but it sure was not a problem as others have noted!!!) I spoke to the Grooms Father and he was from New York and was saying how great the area and Hotel was, and how well and things went at the Reception and was hating to go home!

Well hopefully these comments will help you make your decission to stay at a Wonderful Facility that you and your family will have fun at and tell others about. I know we'll be back as I already have reservations made for a 4 day Snowmobile getaway in January, hope to see you there, and hope your comments help me with my trip next week to Atlanta.

To the owners and managers Keep up the good work, remember we all have bad days! You have a Great Location and Full Featured Facility and with as many people as you have come through your doors, unfortunatelly you have to expect a few bad apples!!!!

Excellent Business Meeting or Training Site

    from

As president of a statewide professional association, I would highly recommend this facility for business meetings and training seminars. My association's experience in July of 2004 was excellent. The meeting and training rooms were spacious, with excellent audio visual capabilities. The meals were very good, rooms beautiful, and service outstanding.

The lakefront location and indoor water park would make it an excellent family vacation spot as well.

My husband, 7 year old, & I just returned from a stay at the "waterpark" hotel in Houghton Lake, Michigan... comfort suites. I was looking for a hotel with a LAZY river in it. We went to this after finding it on the internet. It was better priced than the great wolf lodge in TC. There are only 4 hotels with an indoor lazy river in Michigan that I know of now. It was easy to find & I discovered it must have been recently built. The "new" construction smell is still there. Check in was terrible, but OK if you are patient & don't mind there is only one gal working. The other gal that came did not know ANYTHING. It was her first day. Unlucky for me, the first gal let me have her check me in which did not work as she did not know how to use the computer. I had already paid by credit card over the phone. You have to pay extra for a third water pass. Customers kept coming to the desk to complain about things. Some complained that the room wasn't what they requested. Some said that they wanted a balcony on the lake side, & did not get it. Some said that one guy told them on the phone before coming NOT to make a reservation as there were many rooms available. Someone else told me at the same time (as we compared times) that there was only 2 rooms left. The lobby had inviting comfortable chairs & the elevator worked well. There was a room that served breakfast but remember only until NINE am & after exactly at NINE, they put it all away. So HURRY. The fire doors are very heavy & there are many of them, but they make loud slamming noises at night. So, if you are trying to sleep near the stairs, forget it. Get a room closer to the pool area. That will also be away from the nightclub area if they have a loud band. I woke up suddenly with a great jump in the night. I thought I was at home & someone broke in our house & people were coming in. It was after 2:30 am, & the loud talker party was in room across from us & I had to call the desk twice in an hour & a half. The screen doors for the balcony were the cheapest they could buy, & therefore are now in disrepair & ill fitting. This place will look rundown soon, if they don't keep up with repairs. There was a wooden swing that looked inviting on the terrace overlooking the large lake. However, it was terribly broken & dangerous to use. This place could probably make more $$$ renting out some water toys like waverunners or pontoon boats or some other small water craft, as the lake is very shallow in places. We were talking to a boater using the 100 foot dock, when he realized some other boater that just took off took his anchor!!! We decided to try the southern louisiana themed restaurant there, even though the prices were extremely high. There are many exotic drinks to choose from, but the price is high. The service was good, although we discovered it was our waitress's first day. The manager went from table to table to ask how things were. Kids get beads from the treasure box. The food had beautiful presentation & was very filling & good. However, we could have spent less than the $58 for 3 of us at a local smorgasboard or many other restaurants. The women's bathroom had no toilet paper in the larger stall. The soap was weird. Found out they had soft water. Lots of arcade games everywhere. BEWARE. You will lose your quarter in something. The quarters got stuck in several arcade machines. Bring a needle nosed plier & make sure the snack machines have the digital numbers lit up & working before u put money in. They won't return your money, but u can fill out a little slip... & hope u see it again. The ice machines won't work most of the time. You have to use your room card. There was water on the floor all the time in front of the ice machine. My son almost fell. We tried the water park out & my 7 yr old had fun. I used the hot tubs. One was luke warm & the other a little more hot. They were not as hot as I would have liked. The lazy river was not as big as I thought it would be, & it's current not too strong. The 3 tubes were not filled all the way with air & were waterlogged. Bring your own. We did, but did not use them, as I did not want to go out to the van to get them. They need to make a larger lazy river, but there is no room. There is one water slide & some little pool that sprays water up on you. The water is kind of grungy. They did not turn on the disco lights in the ceiling area which would have been cool. They had music playing, but difficult to hear & not enough speakers by the hot tub. They kick you out at 10pm & 10 am. They will NOT let you take towels out of the pool area. You run back to your room wet. Then, there is no place to hang your wet bathing suit in the bathtub. The floor gets really wet & there is NO bath mat towel. Use little bits of soap & shampoo etc as it does not wash off well. There were no extra sheets for the pull out sofa. There is a hidden closet behind the mirror. Make sure u remember it is there when you leave, as we forgot stuff at first & had to go back. Did not use the safe, as this seemed like a pretty safe place. But after reading one of the reviews, looks like it is good we did not use it anyway. SO, in conclusion:

TO THE GUESTS: try this hotel if you want a place for the night for your child to have some water fun & write to trip advisor & tell them what YOU think. Or if you want a place close to the boat launch & have a boat... Or if you want to party if u have a lot of $$ because you can get away with being loud.

    TO THE HOTEL OWNERS:

FIX the wooden swing or get more so everyone can use one & more chairs instead of lounges. Make another golf putting area.

    GET more qualified HELP

MAKE your help SMILE & be friendly & help us!!!

FIX the vending machines & arcades or get a tool to help us get our money back or give us money back & bill the vendor later

INSTALL new screen doors or you will have problems down the line.

    CLEAN the pools

INSTALL more speakers by hot tub

PRINT More inform about waterpark area as I don't even know if the TANNING booth was free or not or if there was a SAUNA????

    MAKE HOT TUB HOTTER

SERVE BREAKFAST TILL 11 why not? You won't lose that much money

RENT out water vehicles or include them in price

MAKE your hotel all inclusive DRINKS included

PUT QUIET buffers on the heavy slamming doors

WARN KIDS that they are going to lose their quarters in the machines &

INVEST in a needle nosed plier & tool to get out stuck quarters. Your teen aged help boy at night... maintenance person will find these very handy & it will make lots of guest really happy.

WATER your dying marigolds outside & pick out the weeds. & have someone clean the manure out of the parking lot

HELP quiet loud quests immediately or prevent it from happening by having a security guard at the bottom of the stairs by the restaurant. These doors were supposed to be locked after hours anyway. This would have made it more difficult for those loud party people to keep going back & forth.

    Great Time!!!!

    from

We booked four rooms for a family outing. We had excellent service. The restaurant had excellent service and the food was fantastic. The only thing they could use is a little more help, staff wise. The staff was very helpful, but they were understaffed. Our rooms were clean, the pool area was fantastic.

I would definitely come back to this hotel!!!!

    Very impressive

    from

After reading reviews I had to check this place out for myself. I knew this was the right choice in hotels as soon my date seen the room and the view of the lake. the primerib buffet was awsome.

we also had provided transportation to and from the limberlost nightclub. My date and I can,t wait to go back. thanks

    Terrible Experince- NO CUSTOMER SERVICE

    from

This was the worst hotel experience we have EVER had. Forget the fact that our reservations were a mess (even after booking over a month in advance). We were told we'd be offered a discount for the inconvience, but instead we found extra, unthauthorized charges, on our credit card. This hotel offers NOTHING when it comes to customer satisfaction. A campground could offer more customer service. Our toilet flooded on the first day. The pool area was so hot/humid it was unbearable. The hotel manager/owner was rude and displayed little patience for anything going wrong in the hotel. Nobody warned us that the room safe could not be used, and someone in our party had a purse stuck in the safe for over 3 hours, until the police encouraged busting into it with a metal bar (hotel management did not so much as appologize for the wait or inconvience). We left early because we couldn't bear to drop another dime in a hotel where customers mean absoultly nothing. I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy!

    Worst Hotel Experience Ever

    from

This was our worst experience with a hotel anywhere. We reserved well in advance of our stay and called to confirm our reservations. From the time we checked in [several families], there were problems with accomodations. The rooms were not as promised, the restaurant food was substandard, and the indoor pool was dirty and overheated and not as large as the description [all of our children were sick the next morning]. There was absolutely no attempt by the owner of the hotel to make-up for all of the inconveniences we suffered, so we cut our stay in half. I do not recommend the Comfort Suites Lakeside to anyone.

The next day, I follow Dad around the new car lot, while Mom waits in our car. Within a couple minutes, Dad points to three Plymouth Dusters.

“That’s the car you’ll get. Which color do you want?”

“The red one,” I reply. As Dad goes into the dealership to negotiate the deal, I ponder, This Duster is a basic looking four-door vehicle, which I’d never ...

Tomorrow we head to the Upper Peninsula where we will spend a few days --- probably until Wednesday. Looking forward to it. One thing I can say so far.........people are soooooooooooo nice.
