      ... on a tour that was already going on. Once inside the fort an interpreter in full Union uniform gave a nice little talk on what life was like for the soldiers then. We then worked our way around the fort. It was quite large (bigger than Fort Independence I think) and really interesting to see the civil war cannons, sleeping quarters for soldiers and officers, medical room, provision room etc. The views from the upper level were great.       ... The home was built as a summer residence for John Cole before 1850. In the latter half of the 1800's, it was enlarged. There are two historical outbuildings on the property. One is a slave cabin, and the other is a summer kitchen. The main house is the third oldest structure remaining in Beaufort County. There is a guided tour for a nominal fee.
