Left Gladstone at 9:45am and arrived in Mackay at 3:30 pm. Rained hard most of the way. Did I already comment on how really bad the
road surface is here? It’s really hard
to believe. All I can think is that not
enough people drive between these far apart towns to complain. Then we pull into Mackay and it’s like
... horses actually run along the beach at low tide. We saw this from the roadside at the marina. There was a lot of people there cheering for there horse of choice.
A walk along the marina promenade checking out the yatchs and apartments. There was quite a few restaurants along the promenade. A pub had some loud music being played and the large crowd was enjoying it. The fish & chip shop near the lighthouse was full ...
... to "Rosa's", I think. On first inspection the place looked fairly standard and the fact that the wee lady who took the money on the door was the same wee lady who ran the laundrette at the marina was somewhat comforting. Once inside the first thing that sprung to mind was there was a severe lack of women, but a severe abundance of afros. I thought we had accidentally stumbled into 1970's Black America. Not to worry, to the bar and beers all-round. Now being from Glasgow, ...
... pulled out the atlas and rang a caravan park in Kuttabul which is just north of Mackay. They had a drive through site so the lady was expecting us at 5.30pm having achieved 771kms for the day (about the same as our huge day from the tip to Lakeland). On arrival it looked a little dodgy but the lady owner was nice guiding us to the second last drive through spot she had on her pushy. It seemed to be a park ...
I started the day with a beach run and Heather a beach walk (collecting shells). Upon completing my run I waded in the ocean and then had a swim. It was beautiful.
I had to cycle into the supermarket (4km) to stock up on food.
After lunch I cycled into Nth Mackay and watched a bit of the local footy. Heather took it easy at the caravan park and had a wade in the pool.
The weather is superb here.
How has this hotel rated in the past?
Upon arrival the staff was unfriendly. I asked to change rooms due to our neighbor smoking outside. They asked why I wanted to change. I told them and he then asked the neighbor to smoke further away. The place was not full so they could easily have moved us. Just not a good experience. The A/C ran loudly and upon startup sound like a truck starting up. We stayed in Unit #2
