... the backpack and drop off Michael's purchases and we were on our way.
The southern most province of Mexico is almost tropical, and as we drove through the rain towards Tapachula, I found the countryside enchanting. The drive went quickly as the buses guide filled us in on local history and what we could expect to find in the city, which apparently was not very much. He talked of how the Fox government had poured money into the port ...
Tapachula, Pacific Coast, Mexico annoiatissima... very slow spanish so we could understand him. Within 45 minutes we were settled into a basic but clean room and eating the best fresh fish and garlic potatoes I have ever had whilst drinking rum and juice with our toes in the sand.
Chilling in a black sand paradise (with the cows)
The next morning we woke early and whilst Jody was reading in a hammock I went for a walk on the beach. It was about 50 metres wide and the sand was an ...
... This served me well, as I will tell you shortly:
I awoke at 4:25AM and had to RUN out of my house because I had to be at the Quetzal Trekkers home base across town by 4:45, and I had promised them I would be there at 4 to help make guacamole for the trip and other last-minute stuff because they are a little short on guides about now. So, I was totally stressed out and running with my camping backpack packed to the brim with a sleeping bag, a winter coat, two ...
... money and bring him Quetzales when I got back - he just brushed me off and told me to go speak to the waitress. Turns out we werent the only ones to think he had an attitude. We met Luis and headed off on our trek.
Luis spoke English really well and told us about himself, his family and about his time in Guatemala. He had initially studied for free at a seminary and 3 years later he realized pristhood wasnt for him. He was only 26 so he was still very ...
Alweer lekker
... chapter with alex and saydee the day after but with the news that the both of them are thinking about setting up home in mexico city, well it almost certain that the return leg will start there!
Mexico was a real surprise for me, i wouldn't say that i was not expecting much but i i was a little bit apprehensive about some places. There was no need at all, as with just a little of common sense you can avoid any kind of trouble that you think you might get ...
... In Tanzania we called them 'pori stops' with the women going to one side of the road and male passengers to the other. But when I looked up I saw a sky, which, as a city dweller, I hadn't taken notice of in years. We had witnessed a lunar eclipse in South India and I got out of bed to watch a meteor shower (under a full moon) in Portland in August of 2007. Thousands of stars - years ago I would have known some of them - but their names didn't ...
Tapachula, Pacific Coast, Mexico stix_na... tourists. He was there to leave Mexico and renew his Mexican visa (also overstayed!) and visit the hot springs around Xela, before heading back to Mexico. A sound guy, well travelled and most importantly fluent in Spanish!!! We decide we had the same plans (with a Spanish speaking chaperon, Xela was far easier/preferable to Guatemala City) and headed into Tapachula itself to find a cheap hotel. Hospodej Santa Fe it was, at M280 for an en-suite air conditioned ...
Tapachula, Pacific Coast, Mexico brabzzz... run into dog gangs rather than street gangs. Yesterday, I ran into a gang of 25ish street dogs rifling through a trash can on the way to the bar. However, there was a lot of barking and fighting going on between the dogs so instead of a hunting party I may have come across two rival dog gangs engaged in a turf war.... I am off to Mexico this week for a little vacation before we head off to Honduras. take all, love, Dan
