We concluded after much muttering and sniping, that maybe we were being unreasonable since they were patently in the process of cleaning up after the wet season's deluges, which bring tons of silt and tree debris down with them. In the midst of all this sat a solitary tame Kookaburra sitting on a branch, just watching us from a few feet away. He was the highlight of the Malanda falls. After a thankfully short 2 hour coach ride (we were ofcourse carrying the lovely Cairns souvenir of a hangover with us), we arrived in the little town of Mission beach. A short minibus ride away took us to our hostel Jackaroo - a wooden shack looking structure in the middle of the forest sporting hammocks in the grounds and the warning of wild cassowary's roaming (an oversized, aggressive bird a little like an ostrich native to Australia) - the tranquility we ...
