Unterwegs Richtung Fredericton

The West Cape and New Glasgow

... a creek in front and bunkers on both sides, is down on the valley floor below. Standing on the tee you have no clue what to hit. None of us guessed correctly. At the end of the round there was a bucket full of PEI mussels in the bar with an invitation to help yourself. Without question the best golf experience we had during our trip.

For our final dinner on PEI we went back to the Fisherman’s Wharf in North Rustico where more crustations saw their final sun set.

On to Moncton

Monday, September 7 – To Moncton N.B.... Following an early "continental" breakfast, whose sole merit was that it was free but still way too dear, we were on the road again. At Riviere-du-Loup the Trans Canada Highway dives to the south east and, symbolic perhaps for the disdain of Quebec for the impoverished economy of New Brunswick, becomes a two lane highway virtually all the way to Edmundston. After a thousand kilometers of divided highway ...

and the Mutschmanns try Lobster!

Well, the main itinerary point today was to meet a New Brunswick homeschool family at the Tidal Bore park in Moncton. This meant a few hours of driving and warily watching the skies. Our meeting was to be an outdoor one, so we hoped it would at least be dry! Jen was another lady I had "met" on the CHB board and had messaged me to contact her if we were coming through Moncton. We had hoped to include another CHBer (Jodie) in our little party, but that ...

Miramichi Salmon Aren't Biting

... and meditatve effects of standing in the river all day! Hah, that didn't go over too well. This B&B is the only one we're spending two nights at so I took advantage of this break and spent the entire day relaxing, reading, sleeping, checking out all the rooms in the house, etc. We returned to Bistro 104 for yet another good meal then it was back to Governor's Mansion to get rested for the next leg of the journey.

Salmon Fishing on the Miramichi River

After leaving Woodstock we took the River Route along the western edge of NB. First stop, the covered bridge Hartland NB. The 1,282 foot Hartland Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the world. It was originally constructed by the Hartland Bridge Company, which was formed by citizens on both sides of the St. John River, and officially opened July 4 ...

Moncton!

... are currently cutting down their staff and encouraging self check-in, I suppose it might also have been reasonable to expect that the check-in lines might have been long. They weren't. So, we were at the departure gate within about 20 minutes of arriving at the airport, and had over 2h to wait. But, as my mother said, better to be laughing at how early you are than crying because you missed your flight. Got into ...

On to New Brunswick

Again a lovely full breakfast (is there any other kind when you are taking in lots of fresh air and exercise?) at the small inn where we stayed - the Acadian L'auberge Daucet Inn. Today started off sunny enough for a pleasant walk, but quickly turned to rain. No problem as it is a long day of driving. We did stop off at the Glenora Distillery, the only place in North America where single malt whiskey is made. Another stop at Mother Webb's for ...

Near Death Experience

... French culture, though. But I soon find out that I have mourned too soon. NB is VERY bilingual, and there are still lots of French signs and accents. Our route will take us over at least 3 of the 5 scenic routes designated by Tourism NB. The first bit from Edmondston to Saint-Leonard is the River Valley route, and it is suitably pretty. We get groceries for a picnic lunch in Riviere-Verte, and are thrilled to discover picnic tables complete with a roof right on a nearby ...

Edmunston to Rogersville

Edmunston passing by Renald's home; I liked the little village, they seemed all so friendly!

Stopping by Renald's home...Collette, New Brunswick, population 1200.

I enter the kitchen, under the stern watchful eye of who was to become my future mother in law.

She is neither friendly nor impressed! I suppose, looking back, Quebec's fashion, clothing, hair and make up, is ahead and very different than the comfy style, not so cosmopolitan, worn in small villages ...
