... numbers of soldiers whose names are on the walls of the monument, from Great Britain, Australia, South Africa, India and of course, Canada. Thousands of names of boys who were never returned to their families, whose names on walls 100 years later still bring such feelings of sadness. It is amazing that this town honours them every single evening at 8 o'clock and that a huge crowd gathers for it. It was a humbling experience for us.

... kindly let us use their washing machine so we had clothes to wear the next day! Their house was set in a beautiful English country garden they had developed form a paddock over the last 30 years. Mike and I slept down stairs and the 3 children were in beds up stairs with a sloped roof and skylight. There were photos of their travels all over the walls and they were keen for us to help them plan their trip to NZ.
