Gobble gooble, the worlds best turkey.

Imagine a big billboard with a really sad looking turkey and the line underneath say's "Think you're having a bad day? It's nearly Thanksgiving", ha, ha, ha. We totally loved it.

Thanksgiving has arrived and so have we, back in North Carolina to spend this holiday with Mike, Moni and the girls. They very kindly invited us to visit for the holiday. We love this holiday because it is primarily celebrated with food! Delish! Like I said previously Mike and Moni are ...

It's Avocado Salsa!

... Mike, Moni and their girls, Claire and Aggie. We helped Mike fire up his homemade outdoor Cob oven, totally awesome, and introduced everyone to dessert pizza (yum!). This area is home to EarthHaven Ecovillage, we spent the afternoon there checking out their annual Useful Plants sale and learning about edible plants in public spaces. It was interesting. Mike and Moni are seriously motivated cooks and we ate ...

Last Day in Asheville

Nov 3 and 4 – our last two days in Asheville.

We looked at houses and condos yesterday. So many decisions: A dream house with large, beautiful rooms or a scaled down-condo?

There were three homes in a gated golfing community. As we entered the community, a sign on the guardhouse warned, "Please do not feed the bears." Seriously. We also saw wild turkeys crossing the road (see picture).

Dave golfed this morning. He ...

Personal Rating of Asheville for Retirement

... Asheville has an Opera and Symphony Orchestra, several locations for live music (Blues Traveler was here two weeks ago), outdoor music festivals and playhouses. There is a variety of ethnic restaurants including multiple German, Greek, Indian, Latin, Mediterranean, Japanese including Sushi, Thai, and Vegetarian restaurants. We’ve tried German, a Latin fusion and Mediterranean and found them all to be quite good. We also went a ...

... decorations. Gene spent over an hour assembling a Halloween lantern. We left for our tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway. When we returned, six hours later, they had more on display than most houses: A blow-up ball with ghosts, pumpkins, bats and confetti; a table display with pumpkins and scarecrows; a smoking cauldron and a bubble machine (more on the bubble machine later). But their display paled compared to the people across the street ...

A Smidgen of Blue Ridge Parkway

We drove a part of the Blue Ridge Parkway today. The Parkway, 469 miles, starts in Virginia at the Shenandoah National Park and ends in North Carolina at the Smoky Mountains National Park. 2010 will be the Parkway's 75th anniversary.

We probably covered only 10 of the 469 miles. Because of potential rock sides, the section of the parkway between miles 400 and 410 was closed. The detour on ...

Cadiz, KY to Asheville, NC- RV or Ark?

... 8216;smoke’ (the clouds). What a sight! I told Dave when I was a kid, I used to think the smoke of Smoky mountains was real smoke.

One reminder of the mountainous terrain are the runaway truck ramps (link from Wikipedia). Scary – the thought of a several ton truck barreling down the steep mountain grades that can’t slow down (and the ramps are scary, too). Google runaway truck ramps and you'll see ...

Hippies!

... place was so cool and friendly, and great place to spend the night, and free WIFI too.

I ask them where the name came from and the guy said it was named in the memory of two pet fish that had died. That sounded about right to me and we talked about the town and a good local place for me to start. So I headed uot (everything in walking distance), plopped at the local bar foor some food and Monday Night Football.

A campsite with a million dollar view

We spent 3 days in the Mountains near Asheville, N.C. The R.V. resort was a small one, about 25 sites but situated high in the mountains with a great view.
A visit to the Biltmore Estate and Chimney Rock is a must when in this area. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also nearby.
