... In Canada I think they just assume that people are neither stupid nor impolite so we don't get all these announcements. I'm not sure if this reveals more about you, Amtrak, or about Americans in general, but as I know how to be polite on a train (unlike a lot of your staff) I'm not sure I care for it. I know how to be polite in other places too, for the record.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pop a Gaviscon before dinner.

      Yours sincerely,

Up until very recently, I've always thought of myself as someone who can talk to anyone about anything, but I think I've had it backwards. Anyone can talk to me. Maybe ...

      ... mind!!!

The tour ends, surprise, in the candy store where there’s not only Jelly Belly candy, but chocolates, malted milk balls, candy corn, the candy that started this mega-business, gummy worms, and lots of merchandise. We found the Belly Flops, the bags of irregular candies that don’t make it through quality control. We don’t care what they look like, they’re still the same flavors, just weird shapes at ...

Here's to adventures and furry hats!

A travel blog entry by jginsburg on Jan 23, 2013

... I tell people where I’m going, I almost always get a "Oh my god, it’s going to be SO cold!" followed by “You’re going to have to get one of those furry hats!” We shall see. It will be an adventure, but I am very excited. I started studying the language freshman year, partly (among other reasons) because I wanted to be able to study abroad in Russia, and now it’s rather hard to believe it ...
