Philosophical Ramblings

... set up, rushing to get to the next town and set up camp before it gets dark, rushing in the morning to get up and dressed before the next presentation is due. Perhaps I should take a page out of Euroa's book, and take some time to slow down and smell the roses (or the musty yet comforting aroma of old books.)

In other news, the idiot with the obscene text messages has struck again, and I am now in a dilemma. After I spoke to the police last ...

On the sheepfarm, straight under the Milky Way

... then the trail out of town to make sure I knew where I would be going the next day - still get a bit up tight about towing - just in case I box myself into a dead end street. Still remember the U-turn I did on the Princes Highway - almost drove up the railway line!! We sussed out the Seymour Loco (depot) looking for a G class supposedly having a bogey exchange to standard gauge. Didn't find it. Ted a bit disappointed - I wouldn ...

Spring Carnival

... race is the Melbourne Cup and is a public holiday - even schools are cancelled! In America we have public holidays for dead white men, religious ceremonies and to celebrate dead birds - but nothing that celebrates an event that revolves around gambling, drinking and horses. So the definitions of the words above are: Cup Eve: the day before the cup - always a Monday - when people go out and get drunk Quinella: a type of bet to place on two horses hoping ...

Sydney Halloween

... realised how much I appreciated living quietly so close to the sea and the countryside). Anyway...! We're now in Sydney and will be for the next three months, so there's nothing else to do but get on with it, get a job and take as many positives out of the experience as possible. Positive number 1. The house we live in is pretty cool. There's 20 of us in total. One or two people come and go every week or two, but in the ...

... country with no expectations, simply a case of since it's so close we may as well tag it on!!However, I was blown away by how beautiful it was and at how at home I felt. And although Donna mentioned, another waterfall, another scenic view......If you stop every so often to actually take in what you are looking at, it is breathtaking every time. It is definitely somewhere I would go back to, although I may try to take in their summer next time ...

Return to Melbourne

... the old 8:00 - 4:30 routine. So what's been happening since we got back? Well firstly Jo's mum Margaret arrived on the same day we got back, for two weeks to co-incide with the school holidays. It was great to catch up with her again and I was even able to show her how far I'd come in my red wine appreciation course by recommending a couple of nice bottles to her. I think she must have liked them as she was soon heading down to Dan Murphy's to buy a box. Margaret's stay ...

Aussie Icons

... Coming from America it is difficult to understand the need to have one person represent their country because everyone knows about America. In the middle of the Amazon jungle people know that Brittney Spears just had a baby. In the middle of the outback people know that Bush is the president of America. But do those two represent the entire country? That is kind of where Australians are... do Kylie Minogue and John Howard (the Prime ...

Homeless

... housing situation in June. I had a friend take some of my things to his house to keep, but then used a shopping cart to push myself, my luggage and my dog (yes I now have a dog - more to come) to the tram. I took up four seats and had to have people help me change trams in downtown Melbourne on a Friday night. I had never felt so much like a bum - shopping cart and all. (If you are asking yourself why I didn't take a cab it would have been well over $50 and being a ...
