Another Flying Visit to Cairns...

Ah, another 'enjoyable' flying trip around the expanse of Australia en route to Papua New Guinea... The flights actually weren't too bad to be honest, with a very short stop over at Ayers Rock airport and I arrived in humid Carins on time and ready to get some food and then sleep. A short wait for my bag (yes it arrived!) and then an even shorter wait for a taxi and I was off. The hotel was the one I'd stayed in before on my last trip to Cairns on business and I manged to at least get a bette...

Cairns, 1/2 Day 1

The flight to Cairns was super easy and only a quick 3 hours! When we landed, I had to walk across nearly the whole airport as a lot of it is under construction. Got my bags then kinda didn't know what to do. So I grabbed a cab.

When I pulled up at the hotel, there was a TON of Asian teenagers in the lobby! Like I am talking 100-200 kids!!! GREAT! Apparently they have just arrived as well and were all ...

Snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef

... were less than ideal, we all had fun! Next time, I would probably go with a different tour company that allows for more time in the water. With this company, I always felt a bit rushed. In addition, they were constantly pushing upgrade options to our basic package on us - which we didn't appreciate too much.

When we returned to Port Douglas, we headed back to Lure Restaurant for Happy Hour. This time, oysters were $1!!! Can ...

Sugar Cane Mill

... July through November. The mill is completely self sufficient in it's operation. The raw sugar is shipped mostly within Australia and Asia with some of it going to Canada. We are hoping to go to the reef in the next couple of days. Unfortunately, the sea conditions have not been good lately (too rough) for snorkeling. They are forecast to settle down Thursday or Friday. Today we are going to the edge of the outback. The area is called the Tablelands which is west of us.

More of the east coast

... in the afternoon and i cooked up the rest of the bbq stuff for lunch. The lake was excellent, wish we had more time there but it was great to be there for a bit. Then drove back to ferry and went to hostel, we lost our deposit on the van but had an awesome time anyway. We left hervey bay after a couple of nights and went to a town called 1770 (when J.Cook discovered it) which was a smaller, untouched version of byron bay. we stayed one night there but i wanted to stay a week ...

The Great Barrier Reef, Rainforest and Rafting

... with Alan and went to the front where it's much easier to fall out. Sure enough I was in the drink within minutes and then again soon after! On one all the other boats were queued up watching. We went into the rapid at an angle with it leaning down on my side, we hit the water and under I went. I came up being sloshed around as we were still in the rapid and holding onto the boat was not the best idea as it pushed me against the rocks. Finally I let go and ...

"Keeans"

... had to buy food at these bars before they would serve alcohol, this being Good Friday and all. In reality it was like a $15 dollar admission fee. So we decided against that and went back to our hostel were we knew the bar was open. Open till 10pm and not 12 as we thought, so we went to bed quite sober.

Kenguruiden maassa

Junarata ...

Cairns

... br>

After leaving the museum behind I found myself once more in the Botanical Gardens, and from there I found what I was after. A large sign stood at the base of a long pathway of stone steps, marking out the 7.5km trail up and around Mt Whitfield. It also warned that the walk was very steep and strenuous and a high level of fitness was required to complete it. Being ten foot tall and bullet proof I gave this warning the contempt I ...
