Ah, another 'enjoyable' flying trip around the expanse of Australia en route to Papua New Guinea... The flights actually weren't too bad to be honest, with a very short stop over at Ayers Rock airport and I arrived in humid Carins on time and ready to get some food and then sleep. A short wait for my bag (yes it arrived!) and then an even shorter wait for a taxi and I was off. The hotel was the one I'd stayed in before on my last trip to Cairns on business and I manged to at least get a bette...

Cairns, Queensland, Australia 0156... the return trip!!!!!!!!!!! (Edna says was hellish) took us down in a cable car - she was ******** herself (good photos to prove it). Ed was sure he saw Ant and Dec in the jungle! Getting excited about seeing Frances tomorrow, off to Brisbane in the afternoon and it sounds like she has planned something wonderful for us for the first couple of days ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia ednabuchan... Cairns and Kuranda up the Barron Gorge was almost a miracle of construction. 1500 workers lived in tented settlements close to the section on which they were working many of the men had wives and children and some of these encampments became lively centres with ‘entertainment’ pubs stores and in one even a church. The navies cut the track along the edge of the valley cutting 16 tunnels with just picks, shovels and dynamite, in addition they also had to ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia jatty... the body is burning a lot of calories to fight against the coldness of the deep sea.
All my youth I learnt we should not eat just before going to the water but wait at least 2 hours(cuz it can create some kind of a shock) and here it is: eat as much as possible... 15min before entering the water!
Great stuff and another personal objective achieved here (was an objective for the last 3 years!!)
Will pursue in Thailand and Indonesia.
... reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.
The Great Barrier Reef is an extremely ancient ...
... on deck with the first really sunny day and then transferred back to Cairns. We still had a few more days in Cairns and wanted to experience the other major natural attraction, the Tropical North Rainforest. Three young guys from England had stayed on our dive boat, and told us about a small overnight eco-tour leaving the next morning from Cairns. Rainforest walks, waterfalls and wildlife was right up our alley, so we were able to book the last two spots on the tour. One ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia slpbls... the rainforest canopy. There were some stunning views of the rainforest, mountains, and ocean in the background. The sky rail ended in a small tourist town of Korunda. I wandered through a butterfly sanctuary and took a scenic train back through the rainforest and overlooking the gorge. It was a nice quiet day. Rachel and I found dinner and settled in for our big trip tomorrow. Hoping for another exciting journey to a new place. We'll see what happens.
Korunda, Australia charliekelli... thing. We only stayed for one drink and then headed back to the hostel as we were all a bit knackered. When we got back to the room Hayley and the Ozzy guy in one of the other bunks were both already asleep so we had to creep around using a torch rather then putting the lights on. Flo had wanted to pack her sucksack for the morning but it was a bit hard in the dark so ended up just having a shower and leaving it to sort out in the morning.
Cairns, Queensland, Australia oldhamguy... spent about 2 hours in the water and it was absolutely amazing! Just being able to float around admiring the schools of fish and wonderful coral reefs is something that you could literally spend all day doing. I nearly collided with a huge box jellyfish after passing some scuba divers and saw a shark hovering below me but thankfully avoided being disabled by both. Later that week I went up the coast for a few days at Cape ...
