    After two long flights we are finally in Bangkok. We are staying at a hostel outside of a fantastic night market. So for a late dinner students wandered around the night market and tried lots of interesting dishes sold by venders...pad Thai, noodle soups, roast ...

But, it is easy to immerse yourself in culture more than the average tourist when you are on a study abroad and when you have a good travel company to work with...and I have the best! We will be traveling with Thai guides, staying in locally owned small guest houses and hotels that really have some local color, and we will get off the beaten path too. We will be in many areas that are not big tourist destinations...more on those later.

    ... for the Thais...they take to the streets in protest quite a bit. Right now the courts are requiring the Prime Minister to step down as a part of a corruption investigation related to a rice buying scheme that helped farmers but hurt the country's exports. A new election is called for in July but Thais are taking to the streets to protest. My contacts tell me that only specific parts of Bangkok are impacted and we will stay away from those areas. Throwing a jumper on was enough for us to sit outside as the sun set, and I got a quick preview of the hill that awaited them both in the final few hundred metres of their Saturday race.
