A local town for local people

... kept her awake on the endless straight road. She thought she was boring us to tears but it was actually quite interesting. Anyway Quorn’s definitely a local town for local people, with the local guys staring at you like they’ve never seen a girl before, but is very quaint and looks like something out of an old American western.
Not far from the town we visited the ruins of the Kanyaka Homestead, where the ever intelligent white man ...

Day 18 - Kimba to Port Augusta

... approaching Whim Creek. It had that lovely blue/green haze with that earthy red look like the Pilbara. And low and behold, it is iron ore country also - we passed Iron Knob, which I was told was the first iron ore mine in Australia.

Which reminds me - g'day to my sister and brother and their families in Karratha - hope all is well!

We arrived in Port Augusta at about 2pm - enough time to take my bike (and also Yvonne's) to ...

Arrived Port Augusta

Day 1 completed with no real issues. We were finishing the loading of the camper on Friday night - wouldn't you know it.... Adelaide has had no rain for months and just when we need to open the camper, the heavens opened! We had to brave the elements and shift all the cars so we could get the camper under the carport and in relative dryness. Bit of an issue when we discovered that the battery compartment had leaked and was a ...

The Barossa to Port Augusta

... to the point of hysteria when Rhiannon purchased a book for $1 - one must wonder how long it had been since she'd seen another human being, let alone a customer. We used the facilities, which consisted of a very clean, but sinfully hot, corrugated iron hut - it was like peeing in an oversized Heinz can as they bake the beanz. If GoogleMaps are to the noughties what the North Star was for ye olde explorers of yore, the only significant difference is that ...

... of grass coming out of the top and then one large spike sticking up about a metre or so. In fact the plant is called Black Boy in less politically correct circles because of its supposed resemblance to an Aboriginal boy with big bushy hair holding a spear. Every day's a schoolday in this blog isn't it? Hope you don't mind learning stuff, I just found it all really fascinating. The plan is always to talk more about my feelings and describe stuff I've done and ...

Quorn burgers...

... i don't believe it! What could be dangerous? Soul sold and we were away. We initially drove for about 2 hours north to a small town called Clare. This took us, incidentally, through a town called Saddleworth. As with most places in Australia that share names with English towns or cities (and there are many; when i lived in Melbourne my train journey to the city centre passed though Croydon, Blackburn, Surrey Hills, Canterbury, and Burnley) this is no coincidence. It ...

Marla to Port Augusta via Coober Pedy - Day 213

... have build underground to stay cool and shelter from the frequent dust storms. I visted an underground church, which was cut straight into the rock. A strange little cave which can probably sit 30 people with an alter and all the other church paraphernalia you'd expect . Homes and guesthouses are build underground level too. Seems like a good solution to the heat problem but it must feel like living in a rabbit warren at times. Coober Pedy is most famous for the mining of Opals ...

Almost Home

We spent a great 2 days catching up with Andy who has just started back at The North Blinman Hotel. He seems really happy in his new/old job. His cottage is over 100 yrs old. From his back door you can see all the way towards Wilpena. I was sad to hear that John Henery has cancer. The camels behind the pub were very friendly but were eating ...
