This is one interesting town, at night I wasn't sure if people were homeless and scary or just fun loving hippies (turns out the latter is true). This university town is perfect if you are afraid of hairdressers as no-one seems to pay mind to their hair so even beards are trendy in this place. We stayed slightly out of town as the Lonely Planet's recommendations stated that places in town were noisy....mmm would like to see if that was the case even in the height of summer. After navigating o...

so the drive down 101 was beautiful, we drove through the heart of the national park and took a hike to what used to be the tallest tree in America, now just a 26 ft in diameter stump.
Fortuna had the same air crescent city had, but we needed to stop after a long day of driving up and down the forest, with all of it's twists and turns. We bolted out of this one asap!!!
... who's family own a cider factory - not alcholic cider, so just apple juice really, but the best apple juice I have ever tasted! Drew gave us a tour of the cider works which was really cool. After our tour, and some free cider/cookies, we all then went to the only bar in Fortuna called the Playroom, it looked like a barroom brawl would break out any minute and my vodka/orange came with about 5 shots of vodka and a splash of orange!!
The next day after a very good ...
... and we forded 3 streams! Good Chevy Cobalt!
The walk followed a creek through a canyon where the walls were covered in.....ferns! We very gracefully criss-crossed over the stream by using logs strategically placed. Okay maybe it wasn't graceful but we didn't get our feet wet. It reminded me of the balance beam from primary school and bush walks in NZ with my family growing up.
After that adventure we went in search of Big Tree. Big Tree is a ...

Ein friedliches Miteinander und alle sind gluecklich.

So from Davis we headed East and drove up the coast to the Redwood National and State Parks. Almost the entire Northern coast is some sort of park, state or national. We decided it was time to rough it and decided to find a campground. We set up camp in Gold Bluffs Beach campground right on the beach..unfortunately the weather wasnt the greatest and it was pretty overcast, which meant no stars. Oh well, it was amazing falling asleep listening to the ocean next to ...

At one place , where the road was high above the beach below we could see a huge mass & some people. We stopped to see what it was & it was a massive dead whale.
... a beach amid the shelter of a rocky cove while, out at sea, a dark band of cloud sat atop the horizon, transforming an alluring place-name into somewhat of a misnomer. Darkness had fallen when I left the campground on foot to go in search of food. I hadn't got far when I heard loud voices and saw a light ahead. As a foot-party approached I could distinguish a bald man with crazy eyes, a stout woman with greasy hair and a young girl of about ten years. The adults wanted to ...
Arcata, California, United States fintan... hike time with our baby). We camped that night, and took a day hike further south the next day. We were able to see some beautiful marine life in the area and no people. It was wonderful. We had it all to ourselves....we heard it was a heavy travelled trail. The next day we headed out back to the car.
