Just Making Miles

A travel blog entry by yen-goossens on Jul 09, 2014

Not much to report today. We drove from Austin to Beaumont, Texas in just under four hours with only a ten-minute stop for tea and restrooms. Not that we're in a hurry, but Lulu planned it that way so we could watch the Netherlands play Argentina in the three 'o clock game (we're in Central time now) in our hotel room. After the disappointing game, we ...

We had planned to have continental breakfast at the hotel around 8:30, but we were running a little late. Breakfast ended at 9:00, but the lady at the hotel brought some food out for us even though it was 8:55. We thought 9:00 was early for breakfast to end, but at least we got something.

We headed to the French Quarter for a walking tour at 10:00. New Orleans wasn't what either of us expected. We first drove through a really run-down area. ...

Unexpected delight with a detour

On our way to Galveston we got caught in traffic so we opted for an adventure in the form of a detour. What a surprising view. The Gulf roughly lapping the shores; beautiful homes on stilts, pastel colors of beach community homes were easy on the eye. I wish more of them were caught in pictures. Small farms, resturants and shops dotted the main drag and the bay was so still in direct contrast of the gulf. This was an enjoyable ...

We drove 300km South East to the tiny town of High Is, the famed birding hotspot for birds migrating north from South America. We had made plans to meet up with birding legend Iain Campbell from Tropical Birding Tours (he does birding tours around the world, Laurie knew him from a tip he gave him while in Darwin to find a Little Kingfisher nest). He showed us around the best spots to go birding, we saw lots including the famous warblers that people flock here to ...

Houston to Winnie 120 miles

... on stilts along the ocean side of the road and Galveston Bay on the other it all looked a bit bleak with a few convenience stores and apartments. TomTom wasn't showing any hotels so we decided to take a road north to Winnie where there were several, we decided on the La Quinta which was very nice and the receptionist told us there was a restaurant next door, Al-Ts Cajun restaurant. Well I wanted to see typical local places & this ...
