Here's some things that made our trip easier:
Solar panels, large inverter and battery capacity all combined to make us self-sufficient and allowed us to boondock (no hookups) so we only went to a campground every five days or so.
TomTom GPS - this was one of the most valuable tools of our trip. It guided us from beginning to end and never let us down.

It's kind of exciting to be out here and it really does look like you are driving into an old western movie. Not sure our minivan quite fits in but hey it's done us proud so far.
