I was going to write last night but garth convinced me into smoking a joint which led to a long walk along the esplanade, it was amazing. the moon is low and the stars are high. everything is upside down, its pretty funny, but it looks amazing.

I saw my first kangaroo yesterday, it ...
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia letsdrawkid... were 11 of us on the trip, along with Fritz, our tour guide. As luck would have it, the group included a lovely Kiwi family with 9 year old triplets, who made great playmates for Jacob and Millie.

Our transport was a massive 4WD van - because there are no roads on Fraser Island - only sand. It is the world's largest sand island - 125km long and 25km wide. The sand dunes are up to 200m tall, but incredibly the island is covered in lush vegetation, with trees growing in the ...
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia geofflove... is amazing as no plant life should survive in sand but the whole island is covered in plants and trees!

After lunch we headed out to the beach, which is actually an official highway, to paddle in another freshwater creek and to see the remains of the Maheno shipwreck, a luxury liner which crashed in 1935 (no passengers or crew on board though).

We then headed back to the mainland after another busy day.
Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia zoeandgigs... side which wasn't the best idea as the sea was quite choppy and the captain had to shut the engines off because the whale was so close. It was a mum with her youong calf and the guide said it looks like the young calf was feeding by the shadows under the water so when it was safe to do so the captain moved us away from them and we headed off towards a boat that was a short distance away and we could see that there was a whale breaching and jumping out ...
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia gaz-lj... was extremely windy and for the first time I did not think it was wise to put up the front flap/canopy. I had already booked a day trip on the following day to Fraser island and as I was being picked up at 7am in the morning I settled down to an early night, this was not totally successful as there was a very noisy crown occupying the camp kitchen until quite late, in addition as the pitches were so close I could hear the man in the next tent snoring away ...

Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia kwagjiani... s windows. We were excited, today was our whale watching tour on board the MV Mikat.

The bus left from outside the caravan park and delivered us to the marina where the tour boats depart for whale watching and Fraser Island. The crew of the Mikat were friendly and welcoming and there were large decks and indoor lounges for comfortable viewing.

The trip out of the bay was smooth and the views across to Fraser Island were ...
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia ferres... golds, oranges and browns. They're very pretty. After I got into my hostel I walked along the beach for a few hours checking them out. Loved it! Afterwards I walked up some massive uphill streets and hiked a short ways to get to Carlos Sandblow. There was no one there when I got there -which was awesome- and very few people showed up later. It was very cool being in this massive field of sand. I even made sand angels.

Good times in Rainbow Beach and the Great Sandy Region.
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia kkherbst... tour of the island and I managed to take some great snaps one in particular the Maheno ship wreck washed up in a storm in 1935. The beach streched on for miles (75 to be exact) and there were light aircraft flights which took off from the beach for a birds eye view of the island.

After a long and eventful day we joined other tour groups in Dingos bar (the only bar on the island) to party the night away! It turned out to be one of the best nights of the trip so far....

Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia jring... watch in the rear view mirror as his passengers’ heads rolled and jerked violently from side to side. Despite all the bouncing, progress along the tracks was very slow and this gave Les plenty of time to give a running commentary on the history and environment of Fraser Island.

Over time I’ve noticed that tourists from North America tend to slip an “i” into their pronunciation of where we now were, calling it “Frasier Island” after ...
