Getting ready to travel - departure date 10/25

... our travels with you through this blog and hope it goes successfully. One of our audiences will be Sophie and Isabelle's classes...."hello fellow classmates/teachers". We hope to bring to this blog our personal experiences and reactions as well as some history and educational value. The girls would also like to challenge the classes with periodic questions about our destination to see if the classes can come up with the answers.
Portland ME

... in the city. From small mom and pop boutiques to outstanding malls, Portland has the upper hand on upscale shopping. You will definitely see your share of dazzling jewelry and fine art, and there is no better place to see it than in the fabulous museums and art galleries. The Portland Museum of Art and the Bayview Gallery are two of the premier establishments in town, and the equally delightful Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum is always a treat. You can ...

... the ocean to visit Old Orchard Beach. The beach could be mistaken for any beach in Hawaii except that the water is freezing. The beach was beautiful but the actual town was Coney Island like with carnival rides and lots and lots of tacky tourist shops. We continued on to Wells along the coast passing many beautiful homes and beaches.

The sun was shining brightly the next day so we decided to go to Kennebunkport. It soon became ...

Kennebunkport is funny enough on its own

... with a yard full of newly-built vintage-design boats. Beautiful. We stopped for lunch at a small roadside restaurant, and tried a "lobster roll". It was the meat of a 1# lobster, cold, mixed with a mayonnaise sauce of some kind, on a really nice roll split open vertically. It was "Way better than Wendy's".

We got to Kennebunkport mid-afternoon, and got settled into the motel, then off to the trolley. As is our practice, we took the ...

But I don't, so I didn't.

That's kind of been me for the last few days really; stopping at places that sounded interesting and then trying to find a motel when I've started to feel tired. what a great city!

... had no idea there were so many! but you can only see them by boat, and turns out maine has the longest coastline of any of the 50 states (i'm pretty sure this is what chris told me). some islands have lots of houses on them, plus a few stores, maybe a school. some kids have to take a ferry to the mainland for school in portland. but some islands are privately owned and have only 1 or 2 houses on them. if maine wasn't ...

Uncle Andy's Redux

... I like it. But these are little pecularities of my own and shouldn't reflect on the restaurant's kitchen staff. The pancakes were fantastic, with cheery raspberries running rampant. Tristan and I differed drastically on our opinion of the homefries. He loved them, I thought they were very average. So a complete toss-up!!! Overheard: From the kitchen: "Doin' the hash thing, Marty."
