Maintenance-down day

We set aside today for car maintenance. We've traveled over 5,500 miles in our car, with over 1,000 left to go, so we used today to get our oil changed and get the car washed. After the car maintenance, we only went another 2 hours down the road to Mariposa, the last town on our road before we get to Yosemite. Since we passed a Costco on our way to …

... attempt to steal my food, another ran off with a bag of pistachios that Franz was eating and chewed through the corner of his bag to access his banana skin in record time without us noticing. There were some lovely blue and black birds that I don't know the name of (they didn't have a very nice song) and a fair few deer. Fraio spotted a bear when we were in the car yesterday but I haven't seen any unfortunately; ...

Finding Balance in Yosemite Valley

... to look down, but I decided that if I was going to survive the Tyrolean traverse across 1,500ft of air beneath me, I had better get used to the exposure now. So I looked over at the waterfall. Nausea overcame me. I stopped at a small ledge where people set up an anchor to highline (like tight-rope walking) and proceeded to dry heave. I looked up and spotted Ben watching me. Whoops. I ...

Day 4 - From Hollywood to Yosemite

... giant pine cones and a red flower thing that we must look up to see what it is. The walk was a good one to do in preparation for proper hiking tomorrow. It took us uphill a little which I admit was a slight struggle, it was totally worth it though. I absolutely love walking through the trees and soaking up the sound of nature. By the end of the walk the sun had decided to shine and we ended on a high.

I shall now pass you over to Chris who will tell you about ...

... plants and animals. The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granitic rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form its relatively gentle western slopes and the more dramatic eastern slopes. The uplift increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in formation of deep, narrow canyons. About 1 million years ago, snow and ice accumulated, forming glaciers at ...

Doesn't live up to Comfort Inn standards.

I was very disappointed with this motel. It was not what I expect from the typical Comfort Inn. I it was really a motel (exterior doors) with little thermal or sound insulation, no elevators, and poorly laid out stairs. We had to climb 4 flights of stairs with our suitcases to get to our second floor room from the parking lot. They had a nice bowed shower rod in the bathroom, but it was installed so high the shower curtain kept slipping out of the tub. They advertised refrigerators, but it was really a community-use refrigerator in the lobby of the hotel where the guests could store their food, if they labeled it. They advertise internet, but it was slower than dial-up, and it wouldn't let my husband's computer on at all. The room was the smallest we've had on our trip, and it was the most expensive one yet, even more than we paid for our Canadian rooms. They did have a very good complimentary breakfast, though.

The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful. We walked to the nearby shops and had a delicious dinner at Savoury's Restaurant. The pool and spa were so refreshing. And the breakfast in the morning was so good - waffles, eggs, and the sausage was delicious. Thank you so much!
