France sucks at Halloween

... English in the entire town. We found our hostel super late at night (and they don't make hostels in France like they did in Spain... no more free internet!). The next morning, we walked into town not really knowing what to see or do. But as we were looking for a quick Petit Dejuner (breakfast) we stumbled upon the Saturday market. We sat at a cafe on the square and had the most amazing breakfast 5 euro can buy if you ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

Over the last months of travel, we’ve met and talked with many people about what we’re doing. As you can imagine, we’re greeted with many responses. Most can’t fathom a trip without end or adgenda. Some say they admire what we’re doing. Setting off onour own, turning our back on convention and creating an adventure. Others think we’re fools. Although the woman who said that ...

... parents for a trip to Cassis, Toulon, and for a drive around the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Yes, I was an 'honoury' northerner for the day (Lizzie, je blague, je blague!). Cassis is absolutely beautiful, picture perfect, with a little marina and a beach, with amazing turquoise-coloured water. We had a huge breakfast there which meant I didn't need to eat again until 7, and then headed along the coast to Toulon, where we walked through a market to one of the marinas, which ...

Aix marks the spot

Bonjour avec Aix-en-Provence Cherie
Since the last news we have visited the Cote D'Azur spending time at Monte Carlo and Antibes. We stayed near Antibes at a place called Biot and at night you could hear the seals at nearby Marineland - very strange. It was still quite hot and stickey with more mozzies. Monte Carlo was wall to wall money with billions of dollars in boats and cars. Antibes was similar but it had a lovely old town as well.
We arrived ...

In the beginning...

... particularly in the old part of town, where we've sat for breakfast and lunch for the past couple of days (like most of my trips abroad, most of my excitement will revolve around food). The atmosphere is very relaxed and there's a real sense that the people here are easily able to separate their work and personal lives, preferring to go out in town after work instead of slumping at home!

Have also got a french mobile! Next, a bank account...

à bientôt

Welcome to Aix! My Home for the Next 4 Months!

... see it!), some attempted and pretty much failed sleep, and a couple surprisingly delicious meals, we touched down in Munich, Germany at 7AM. I was very intimidated by the huge lines at immigration and the stern looking guards but apparently I do have a real passport because they let me through. Walking to my connecting flight I was like a kid in a candy store and VERY touristy as I took pictures of random funny German advertisements, etc. I'm still working on ...

Southern Spain, Southern France, & THE WATER EXPO!

... We mainly enjoyed the perks of big city livin. On our first night, we saw our first English movies since Ireland. First we saw Hancock, and were so entrance by the English theater experience that we were soon in line again to buy tickets to another movie-The Happening. When we walked outside of the theater, we had almost forgotten that we were still in a Spanish-speaking country. On our second day in the city, we explored Madrid's botanical gardens ...

... forms - including the nursery school and paddling pool and a resident's gym). Overall it has stood the test of time quite well - though some of the interior corridors were dark. Couldn't help thinking that if it had been built as social housing overlooking St Charles rather than in the posher 17/18th Arrondisement whether it might have suffered the same fate as Sheffield's Park Hill. Overall, another highly recommended day trip from Aix by public transport.

Life is good.

... to think about this theory a little bit more. Anyway, I'm really glad that I got to see something Cezanne-related because 2006 is the Year of Cezanne. Provence is celebrating the 100th year of Cezanne's death with exhibitions and lots of good PR. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures. I was too tired and lazy for that. But I imagine that I'll be going back with the girls for moral support and second opinions while they do their fancy-clothes shopping, so I'll probably take some pictures then.
