Fly little bird to Hiroshima

Directly after our arrival at Hiroshima I decided to like that little city. Well organised the tourist information was right in front of the train station, nice little trams took one around the city the core of which was squared and structured to make getting around very easy, and basically everything is in walking distance. We still had about half a day to explore Hiroshima by foot and walk around the city centre. When it came to dinner time we noticed that people started queuing up in front...

Touring the islands & learning from our mistakes

HIROSHIMA/MIYAJIMA/IWAKUNI (March 20th-22nd) Thursday was a national holiday (spring equinox day), and I was able to take Friday off of work so we picked up some rail passes and road the shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima. I decided to take my family here because it's one of my most favorite places in Japan, and because I think it's important that all people visit Hiroshima to learn about the destruction that nuclear weapons cause. When we got in to Hiroshima, we went right in for our edu...

Peace

Der A-...

Harro Hiroshima

So we got up pretty early to leave for Hiroshima and wound up waiting around for a while... Had some bakery food for breakfast, one thing I had was good and one thing I had wasn't close. The good thing was sort of a croissant but it was filled with what I assume was a sweet bean paste; the not so good thing was a wiener on a pastry... It tasted stale and filled with mayonnaise. We managed to snag ourselves seats up top in the very front, though that didn't matter as I fell asleep on the bus f...

A HOUSEKEEPING NOTE

I arrived in Hiroshima this afternoon. When I got to the Comfort Hotel, they were VACUUMING THE DRIVEWAY!!! I was so amazed. In case you haven't performed this particular act of housekeeping before, it's done with a canister vacuum, not an upright.

JAPANESE HOUSE MAKEOVER

Saw a Japanese house makeover show on TV last night, mostly focused on seismic upgrading and storage solutions. The "after" house had a drop-down range hood, a dining table that fold...

Hiroshima and Miyajima

Today we went on a tour-de-force through the lovely city of Hiroshima and the island of Miyajima. People met: Cute girls in McDonald's, who very kindly turned down the opportunity to break 10,000 yen note. The dude on the train who works in an auto parts factory and loves American cinema. The friendly and supportive staff of the Hiroshima Comfort Inn A group of random schoolgirls, and many other students at the peace museum, who greeted us and insisted on practicing their English. Sights Seen...

"A-BOMB DOME REVISITED"

... talked away. With interest, I looked at, and listened to this aged man. The translation was a bit difficult for her, but she tried the best she could. She was able to tell me that he was 14 in 1945 when the atom bomb detonated over Hiroshima. Although he lived over an hour train ride away, he said he saw yellow in the sky. He actually saw the blast! He said it was a hot day and that many people were in the river by the Dome. He said they all died ...

Hiroshima: Okinmiyaki, the A-Bomb and smug deer...

... the station that, aside from being home to two pachinko parlours on the ground and basement floors, is also, on the 7th floor, home to a number of stall okinomiyaki restaurants which consist of little more than large hotplates surrounded by some stools. Here we headed down the left hand corridor out of the lifts to meet Erin's mad okonomiyaki chef friend Noriko, who, together with her assistant makes 'Hiroshima style' where the toppings are layered one by one instead of ...

... had not changed much since my last visit. This should not come as much a surprise given the endurance of many of Kyoto's ancient sites over the past millennium - eleven months was not likely to have rendered any drastic alteration. There is a lot to see there, and I used my time to visit places I had not been to before. The previous Kyoto entry (clicky) dealt with temple pictures in considerable ...

... are fairly deserted. The thick forest beyond eventually sprawls up the 530m mountain of Misen-san, which offers a good workout for those willing to hike it. Once I'd enjoyed a delicious lunch of oysters (a local speciality), I decided to give it a shot in lieu of taking the pricey ropeway. It turned out to be quite a sweatfest, requiring about an hour and a half of near-constant ascent. By the time I reached the top, my shirt was soaked through, so I made sure to wash ...
