... artwork as a memorial to freedom. We walked beside the river, where the Death Strip had been beside the wall - East German guards had orders to shoot dead anyone seen here. It was all very sobering, as it was history of our time.

On the way home every bar and cafe had the World Cup on, with crowds of patriotically dressed fans. We knew every time Germany scored, from the cheers, horns and fireworks.
