... the other end of town to visit the other main ruin - Asklepion (after the god of healing) - which was very much like a roman sanitarium/health retreat. There was a natural spring, believe to have healing qualities - it was easy to determine from the placement of the ruins how the sanitarium would have worked and an 'underground' tunnel was still present that linked the 'living' quarters with the 'bath'.

Ayvalik, Balikesir, Turkey traceybelle... out the walk was a mere training exercise for what was to come the following day as we staggered seven kilometres up a mountain to see the Acropolis sounding even worse than the battered Renault 12s that asthmatically spluttered past us. Even the cab drivers at the top applauded us when we arrived and told us how impressive a climb that was.

Note to Tania, next year on my birthday can we just go to the beach please????
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey welovemondays... to speak. So, thinking the right leg of the H was the main road, I walked "across the cross-bar" and turned to the right. But, in about a block the road dribbled out. And I thought, Oh, the guy was just pulling my leg. So I turned right to get back on the right leg of the H. Then, turned left. Well, a little way along that seemed to come to a dead end, at somebody's compound. So, I turned down a little alley, again to my right, to go to the next street over, just as ...
Bergama, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey oldrover... So we had a pretty late lunch at a wee place which served fried sardines, yummy! and then headed up to teh Asclepion, which is an old hospital, one of the oldest I think and it bears the mark of the Carcadeus (snake and sword), I was pretty cool and the sun was setting as we walked around so we got the golden hour. The next day we were off to Canakkale so just a short stop in bergama, but the friendly people and the really old an authentic parts to the place made it worth while.
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey rhibeez... in each of the two towns (to be exact the town at Ephesus is Selchuk) and really enjoyed both of them. We were expecting both of them to be quaint little villages which neither were. In fact, both appear to be functioning and busy little places which have a life of their own despite their proximity to famous ruins which bring a flurry of day trippers each day. Selchuk was a fun little place with nice residential neighborhoods and an easy to manage ...
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey jenandjeffmilum... the place and it was not re-discovered until a German railway engineer found it in 1871. Despite the huge number of coach parties being hauled around the site - they only 'do' the most spectacular part at the top - we found the place to be uncrowded, peaceful and endlessly interesting. We will always remember the smell of wild broom and the glorious array of wild poppies everywhere. We also encountered some of the local fauna including some shifty looking ...
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey chickensafloatSince we missed the bus to Capadoccia, we decided to sleep in a bit and show Aili and Gisela the town (since they were in the conference the whole time. We took a local bus down to the city center and wandered around the clock tower before diving into the maze of streets looking for the old bazaar. Finally, we found it and split up to do some window shopping and stopping for tea ...
Bergama, Turkey zigdog1... As we look at our watch (actually Mike was the only one to wear a watch - making him Official Timekeeper "Omega" we discover that only an hour or so before our bus leaves. So in the middle of the giant Bus Terminal we find a grassy knoll and eat our Kebabs and attempt to play Backgammon on the tiniest back-gammon board ever. Eventually onto the Bus and we are off. WOW! Turkish bus transport is amazing - comfy, air ...
