    The main square holds the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo. Shops and homes covered the hillside alongside the temple.

    A reservoir has been uncovered, big enough to have served 400 families.

    ... was glorious. No crowds to get in the way. We made it to the Palace Of The Grand Masters almost as soon as the doors opened. It is a huge fortress, and palace taking up a good chunk of Old Town, and overlooking the harbor. Very cool place. As we were leaving the tour groups were just starting to arrive.     Rhodes is the most important island in the group known as the Dodecanese or South Sporades. It is also the most easterly island of the Aegean Sea.

    In Greek mythology, Rhodes was created by the sun god and a sea nymph. According to Homer, the first inhabitants were Dorian Greeks. A fortress was built and the city of Rhodes was founded. A huge bronze sculpture, Colossus, was built at the entrance to the harbour but was bought down in an earthquake in 224 BC.
